  • Joe Bageant: Moving to the Center of Elite Consensus - What voters are expected to believe is that after a 30-year class war against the bottom 90% of income earners, the source of their troubles are black rappers and inner city fathers and not criminality on Wall Street or a corrupt political system. The road to the White House over the past 30 years has been paved by pretending to believe the absurdity that the individuals who pull the levers of power over people's lives are named Willie Horton, Sister Souljah and Ludicrous, and not Robert Rubin, Phil Gramm and Hank Paulson.
  • FDIC may borrow money from Treasury: report | Reuters - The last time the FDIC had borrowed funds from the Treasury was at nearly the tail end of the savings-and-loan crisis in the early 1990s after thousands of banks were shuttered.

The fact that the agency is considering the option again, after the collapse of just nine banks this year, illustrates the concern among Washington regulators about the weakness of the U.S. banking system in the wake of the credit crisis, the Journal said.

  • Zagat: Phila. tippers are nation’s biggest | Philadelphia Inquirer | 08/27/2008 - "Philadelphians are the most generous tippers in the nation," according to a news release from Zagat, announcing the official publication today of its 2009 guide to Philadelphia area restaurants.
  • The Real McCain « Jon Taplin’s Blog - To see someone like John McCain use the same tactics and ally himself with the same intolerant nitwits that he once decried is disgraceful. The people who are running the campaign and advising McCain are the same people who masterminded sleaze phone calls branding Mrs. McCain as a drug addict and referring to their adopted daughter from Bangladesh as their “black baby.” What kind of a man are you to not only tolerate these dirtbags in your presence but to employ them to do the same to your opponents? How is it so easy for this “man of honor” to forgive and forget such awful slights?
  • Angry PUMAs on the prowl in Denver | Salon News - But the dumbasses were already primed for a fight. "We've been told by Pelosi that we're ungracious," said Robin Carlson, a cancer survivor from Los Angeles and a member of the Clinton for McCain contingent whom I interviewed after the made-for-TV demonstration. "We've been told that most of Hillary's supporters have united behind McCain. That is absolute crap." Still, Carlson says that 500,000 people have pledged on her Web site to endorse John McCain sometime during this convention. "Our foremothers marched in the streets so that our voices could be heard. We will not be silenced now."

  • Bye, Bye Boomers, Not quite | Newgeography.com - In the end the Boomers could play a less heroic, but still very positive role in the evolution of American communities. Even as the Millennials mature into dominance — and the Xers assert their shot at political leadership — the Boomers could offer the financial wherewithal, the skill and, perhaps, most surprising of all, the wisdom required by a rapidly evolving, and expanding, society.
  • FiveThirtyEight.com: Electoral Projections Done Right: Romney’s Effect On the Map - Romney brings money to the ticket, and not much else.
  • Joe Biden and the political establishment’s overriding goal - Glenn Greenwald - Salon.com - The most entrenched establishment spokespeople are cheering the selection of Joe Biden because, in their minds, that selection confirms the most important fact for them: that in this election, the prevailing orthodoxies of our political system won't be meaningfully challenged.
  • Bye Bye Boomers | Newgeography.com - Now it’s time to realize new values are ascending. Millennials generally get along great with their parents and celebrate the wholesome values of “High School Musical,” where boys and girls of all types come together to defeat those that seek to win only for their own personal ambition. Those nominated in the next two weeks at their party’s convention should heed this lesson. To gain the presidency, the winning ticket will have to appeal to the Millennial sense of pride and teamwork in meeting the challenges the country faces.
