Not so fast, you crazy libertarians.
Between digg and crazy college boys, the fandom and fawning for Ron Paul rivals some sort of political 'Tiger Beat'.
Although I don't doubt the sincerity of many libertarians, and welcome their splintering with the GOP, the fact remains that some of them, at their heart, are no more than Republicans who like to smoke pot.
I'll admit, there is an appeal to the skepticism of the modern libertarian. Their goal though, of limited government, when taken to its logical extremes, actually results in the outcomes of GOP activist Grover Norquist, advocating the "drowning of government in the bathtub". Mind you, the GOP still wants to collect taxes for the services they outsource and privatize, they just want them performed outside of governmental oversight and be able to be incentivized by them via campaign contributions.
Here is the win-win for liberals, conservatives, and libertarians…
What better place to operationalize Libertarians ideals than the Department of Justice?
Paul could directly employ his ideals and values in a far more effective manner in this role, than he ever could for the Oval Office.
Only one candidate has wanted to rein in the War Powers Act and war without end . Only one candidate has questioned the legality and effectiveness of a National ID program . Which candidate has spoken out against the excesses of the Patriot Act ? Who do I trust to safeguard the Constitution? Who do I trust on domestic spying, or signing statements, or terrorism, or anyone of hundreds of hot button issues? Even on abortion, I trust the pro0life, Christian Paul to oppose the governments intervention into a woman's personal decision.
When it comes to support - the Democrats could support Paul's nomination easily due to their alignment with him on core principles, save abortion. Libertarians, obviously, are in agreement. And conservatives, at least in regards to their espoused values of individual responsibility, personal freedom, and economic liberty, should have no grounds for opposition.
Electorally, Paul's absence from the Federal race for President holds promise across the board. The left wlll pickup nominal votes from Reagan Democrats turned off from the GOP over the War, the Environment, the Corruption, and the pushy, preachy over-reaches of the Religious Right. The GOP will pickup the stalwart dissent voters who signaled protest in supporting Paul yet who could never vote for a Democrat (especially Hillary). They can then focus on the real horserace for the GOP nomination without distraction.
Naturally, the above will never happen. And it won't be Paul's pride, Libertarian support, or Democratic obstruction. No, the attacks will come solidly from the right. The lobbyists, activists, and ideologues can NEVER support the threat to their power and economic livelihoods that a REAL, independent Attorney General (and independent Justice Department) represent.
