- Then vs. now: How prices have changed since 1999 – During the subsequent decade, the stock market made us rich as kings, then poor as church mice. We've taken a look back to see how the years have affected the price of 50 things we buy, or wish we could buy. Thanks to inflation, it takes around $1.30 to buy what $1 bought in 1999.
- UNHsocialmedia.pdf (application/pdf Object) – The study found no correlation between heavy social media usage and grades. There was no
significant difference in grades between those considered to be heavy users of social media and
those considered to be light users. For example, 63 percent of heavy users received high
grades, compared to 65 percent of light users. Researchers found similar results with lower
grades. While 37 percent of heavy users of social media received what were defined as lower
grades, 35 percent of light users received fell into that same category. There also was no
correlation between grades and the social media platform used. For example, almost the same
number of heavy and light users of both Facebook and YouTube received the same category of
high and low grades. - How Social Media Has Changed Us – Over the last 10 years, we’ve seen social media galvanize thousands over politics, create as many industries as it has destroyed, and offer an abundance of visual and audio entertainment. But has all this incredible change actually changed us, or just the world we live in?

A Disastrous Decade: The Naughties
On a personal level, this decade has been A-OK. Wife, kids, house, new job, advanced education, and so on.
When I sit back and reflect on the last 10-years, particularly on the things that have occurred outside of my control, it seems to be a never-ending string of disasters – both real and imagined.
Enron. 2000 Election. The non-event of Y2K. September 11th. The Columbia Disaster. The Invasion of Iraq. The 2004 Election. Katrina. The Tsunami. The Great Recession.
I would write a Best/Worst of 2009 and/or the Aughts, but I’m just not feeling it. Check my FriendFeed for “* of 2009″ or “* of the decade”. Aside from personal events, I think this is a decade that I’ll be happy to see in the history books.

- Social Media Today | How To: Hack like China’s Government – Fascinating study done by Northrup Grumman Corporation for the US government’s US-China Economic and Security Review Commission about the Chinese government’s Cyberwar capability.
- Majority Of Tea Party Group’s Spending Went To GOP Firm That Created It | TPMMuckraker – The political action committee behind the Tea Party Express (TPE) — which already has been slammed as inauthentic and corporate-controlled by rival factions in the Tea Party movement — directed around two thirds of its spending during a recent reporting period back to the Republican consulting firm that created the PAC in the first place.
- :::Philebrity…media, culture, music and more::: » Blog Archive » Philly Tea Baggers To Splinter Into (Possibly Hilarious Rival) North And South Groups – So when we tell you that Philly Tea Party Patriots, our region’s living monument to whatever it is that these people think they believe in, are going to be starting up separate groups in the new year for Northeast Philly and South Philly, well, it’s the shot heard ’round… my desk. This is the stuff of true revolts, folks, and we have one question: Which side are you on?
- Submit your logos for the City of Philadelphia — Technically Philly – Submit your ideas for a logo that would better suit the City of Philadelphia — yes, it can be sarcastic or heartfelt. It can even include the Liberty Bell or a cheesesteak if you think they sum Philly up well … and you can endure the taunts of your peers. We’re thinking standard display images, but we won’t begin to limit you, the audience. If it fits in an e-mail or can be linked to, we want to see them.
- Top Records Of The Decade – I've spent the past couple weeks going back and reviewing all the music that I got into this decade. I looked at the last.fm data, my top ten posts each year, and re-listened to a lot of it. And here are ten records that define the decade for me, plus another 30ish that I considered for the top ten list.
- David Galbraith’s Blog » Blog Archive » The top 10 things that defined ‘the noughties’, by category. – In terms of geo-politics, the last decade was one of immense significance, but culturally it was an era that was so artistically bland, that it had no name till it was almost over. Until 2009 almost nobody referred to the noughties.
- Body By Victoria – Secure Computing: Sec-C – Not only did Victoria's Secret not like her skin tone, arm flab, and handbag, they also did not like her chest. They digitally enhanced her bust. Compared with the other image of the model, this image appears to be at least a cup larger. (Insert witty pun here.)
- Christmas folklore: saints and demons – The Ampersand – Be good for more than just goodness' sake! Why being on the naughty list a century ago might have involved being stuffed in a sack and thrown in a river. National Post graphics editor Dean Tweed illustrates Santa's long and dark past.
- The Decade, Summed Up in Icons [PIC] – All the big trends that defined the 2000s, simplified into a pictographic chart. Wow, this Word Perfect clip art really takes me back to 1999.
- The 15 Most Epic Trolls of 2009: Pics, Videos, Links, News – In Internet parlance, a troll is defined as somebody who deliberately does or says something in order to provoke a response and create a disruption. This is a list of trolls who did their best to really piss us off this year.
- Are You Willing to Lose Your Best and Brightest Over a Bag of Pretzels? | KnowHR Blog – There’s an important lesson to be learned here, and it isn’t that you should just give everything away forever and ever. The lesson is that if you want to keep your best and brightest, you sometimes have to continue to provide the intangibles. In the example, those intangibles were simple: free sodas and a liberal dinner reimbursement policy made the company a nice place to work. The atmosphere wasn’t overly corporate or controlling, and employees happily provided the labor needed to keep the company moving. When the company stopped realizing that the relationship between doing extra work and a few extra perks were directly intertwined, things moved downhill and eventually ruined the company.
- FiveThirtyEight: Politics Done Right: The Odds of Airborne Terror – There were a total of 674 passengers, not counting crew or the terrorists themselves, on the flights on which these incidents occurred. By contrast, there have been 7,015,630,000 passenger enplanements over the past decade. Therefore, the odds of being on given departure which is the subject of a terrorist incident have been 1 in 10,408,947 over the past decade. By contrast, the odds of being struck by lightning in a given year are about 1 in 500,000. This means that you could board 20 flights per year and still be less likely to be the subject of an attempted terrorist attack than to be struck by lightning.

- Top Ten blogs: Social Media Measurement « The Seldom Seen Kid – How we measure social media ROI is the hot topic in comunications at the minute. What metrics can we use, what new ideas can we develop, and my particular favouritedo we even need to measure ROI?
I thought I’d collate this after reading and commenting on this post by Mike Litman got my brain swhirling.
Here’s ten of my favourite posts discussing social media ROI, there’s some classics, and some newer pieces too:
- Social Media ROI Superlist « Pivotal Branding – We’ve talked a lot lately about the ROI of social media and how we measure success. There are a variety of theories on the most effective way to assess social media ROI, and Interactive Insights Group has created one of the most comprehensive list of resources I have ever seen.
- 16 social media guidelines used by real companies | Blog | Econsultancy – In a post I wrote called the A-Z of social media for brands I decided that P stands for Policy. I'm not one for too many rules and regulations, but it is a good idea to define some clear guidelines to help staff (especially novices) to do the right thing.
So let’s take a look at some real world social media policies and guidelines as used by companies. Zappos does a great job of summing it up in seven words, but the detail is also important and there are some fine suggestions here…
- Poll shows skepticism on gov social media efforts – General News – “It’s pretty clear that most SmartBrief on Social Media readers feel the White House hasn’t been able to fulfill its lofty goals of providing more transparency through technology,” says Chaney.Despite the negative results of the survey, Chaney does believe that the government is at least headed in the right direction. “I’m encouraged that, whether you agree with his politics or not, we have a president who sees the advantages of a collaborative, grassroots approach to government. Whether the government will become a ‘platform’ of, for, and by the people remains to be seen.”
- Blogging Stats, Facts And Data: 2009 Blog Statistics By The Numbers – The annual state of the blogosphere report provided by Technorati always provides a ton of interesting information for bloggers, marketers and PR pros to use and reuse. My only issue with it is they make us read through pages upon pages of content to get at the good bits, and don’t provide a list of just the stats as a resource.
Well fear not, I’ve gone through the entire report for you and pulled out just the stats that I found compelling. These are useful for presentations, blog posts or even Tweets and are good all year: remember, we don’t get another one until late 2010.
- eyePlorer.com – Our approach is inspired by current research results from cognitive science, computational linguistics and neurobiology. We aim at radically improving the way users interact with knowledge and information online. Recent studies show that human thought processes have a strong visual component and that the brain can process images significantly faster than textual information. We are convinced that it is time for innovative, interactive, visual methods of working with and discovering facts and information instead of wading through ever longer lists of documents and search results.
