More Creative Destruction, City Edition

Fascinating.  I was just talking about this idea today (via the Telegraph):

Local politicians believe [Flint, Michigan] must contract by as much as 40 per cent, concentrating the dwindling population and local services into a more viable area.

The radical experiment is the brainchild of Dan Kildee, treasurer of Genesee County, which includes Flint.

Having outlined his strategy to Barack Obama during the election campaign, Mr Kildee has now been approached by the US government and a group of charities who want him to apply what he has learnt to the rest of the country.

Move over Ron Paul, Digg (and the Internets) PWN Scientology

I’m not sure what the tipping point event was, but the entirety of the internets has declared War on Scientology.

Pissed of the Internets

My guess is that Scientology, as is their usual heavy-handed (including the US Government in Operation Snow White) , litigation-prone, cease-and-desist method, rapidly compelled several internet outlets to pull the creepy Tom Cruise internet video (which, as is always the case with these censorship moments, only makes the subject more desired and more easily available). Currently the entire movie is available in several formats and as a bittorent on the Pirate Bay.

Here’s the short trip to crazyland:

Tickling the Dragon’s Tail

Disclaimer:  I am by no stretch of the imagination an economist.

In listening to Ben Bernake's statement on the state of the economy and in consideration of the fiscal interventions as well as the pending economic stimulus package, its relevant to revisit the academic specialty of Mr. Bernake – the Great Depression.  As I had written previously:

The Wall Street Journal (subscribers only) has come to the same conclusion I did about Ben Bernake, prospective replacement for Alan Greenspan – he’s been very influenced by his academic research into the Great Depression.

23:58 Can Jack Bauer defeat the Elephant in the Room?

I bailed on Fox's 24 very early in this season – it just became too formulaic, too predictable, and just plain ridiculous.  This week, the readers of Jump the Shark have voted, and a sizable number said that indeed, 24 had jumped the shark (although a not-insignificant amount said it had happened several seasons ago).
