Google and Facebook

During each of the user revolts which followed Facebook’s earlier redesigns, the official response from the top had been to dig in their heels and sell the changes they had made.

Google has had a very different response, having made many changes on a near-immediate basis to directly address user concerns and suggestions.

The impact of their differing philosophies may seem insignificant now, but stances like that are what define the differences between the Apple and Microsoft of an earlier time.

Tablets could ruin everything

Speculated mock-up of Apple’s forthcoming tablet product.

I’m watching all the speculation over Apple soon-to-be unveiled Tablet product, due to be revealed on 1/26/2010.   Steve Job’s had questioned the wisdom of a tablet (NYTimes via John Gruber):

Another former Apple executive who was there at the time said the tablets kept getting shelved at Apple because Mr. Jobs, whose incisive critiques are often memorable, asked, in essence, what they were good for besides surfing the Web in the bathroom.

Are You a Fan of Pepsi?

This is kind of a big deal, and may be one of the first mass market attempts of strategic use of Social Media by a major brand.  Pepsi appears to be running a textbook engagement campaign instead of a traditional mass market television campaign for the 2010 Superbowl (via Springwise):

Asking the wrong questions about social media

The mass printing of words via movable-block type did not reinvent books, it lowered the costs and made them more affordable.  The typewriter didn’t reinvent writing, it just made creating content faster and more uniform.

These are simplistic statements and certainly provable as false.  But the point remains valid – social media is going to change some industries and destroy others, but the fundamental processes remain the same.

Measuring the Return on Investment of Social Media

There have been some very good posts (which will show up as bookmarked in my Daily Links at some point today ) about the ROI of Social Media.  It’s clearly time to focus on the contribution to the bottom line and not just the touchy-feely un-measurables.

I haven’t thought through the metrics with the exception of advertising.  If we operate under the rules that Google has given us, we earn more money from Adsense advertising based on our PageRank and the popularity of our content.

  • Gmail Users are Young, Female; AOL Users are Older – Social media data company Rapleaf has just completed a comprehensive study involving the demographics and behavior of webmail users. In the first part of their study, they looked specifically at age and gender data and revealed some interesting findings. For example, did you know that Gmail has more female users than male? And that Hotmail is the other way around? Meanwhile, AOL users are older…but maybe not as old as you think.

Dipping your toes in the social media pool…

What are your big questions with integrating or implementing social media in your organization?

The first question to occur is governance.   Social media policies in general are either vague , unwritten, or unnecessarily restrictive.   I feel it is essential to think out the dynamics to avoid social media blunders and simultaneously take advantage of the positive effects.   The next concern is  privacy, or rather the expectation that we have none (by default); here are two games that can help you understand:

Honda’s Epic Fail

The Pontiac Aztek goes down in history as one of the worst regarded automotive products ever.  The Ford Edsel also shares that notoriety.

2010 Honda Accord Crosstour

It now looks like Honda may be going for a double fail – creating a product no one will like (the voting on automotive enthusiast blog Autoblog leads with “Kill it with Fire at more than 81% and 6000-plus votes) and promoting it (and receiving harsh criticism) over Facebook.
