Thoughts on Google Buzz

  • Just like Facebook has done – repeatedly – Google has miscalculated privacy implications as well as the literacy of its total user base.  Fortunately, they have an opportunity to recover, an opportunity they would be well advised to take advantage, which I suspect they are.  So far, they’ve made a number of small but meaningful changes.
  • I really like the ability to use the keyboard shortcuts from Google Reader.  You can call them up by pressing [Shift+?] or view them here.

Amazon Listmania: Network Attached Storage

Now that my household is desktop-free (with his-and-her’s laptops), it’s difficult to share photos, music, and documents across our wireless network.  I previously had Orb running on the desktop, which allowed me to share files as well as use my at-home desktop’s TV-card to watch TV anywhere, including via capable mobile devices.

At some point in the near future, I plan on adding a Network Attached Storage device to my network.  My criteria is the ability to access files across both my network at home and anywhere via the internet, the ability to stream media off the drive, and the ability to automate backups.  I’ve created an Amazon Listmania for “Networked Attached Storage” to help share my choices with everyone.  Fell free to use the list as well, and comment in the links here with your own feedback, comments, and suggestions.

  • Towns Find Obstacles To Saying ‘I Do’ To Mergers – CBS News – Some New Jersey lawmakers believe they’ve found a solution in having their cash-strapped state act as an ersatz Match.com for towns looking to merge. The state is offering to pay for studies and give a property tax credit to homeowners whose taxes would rise. The aim is to save money and escape Gov. Jon S. Corzine’s plans to slash aid to more than 300 towns with fewer than 10,000 residents. If that doesn’t work, these towns risk losing state aid.
