Saving our Democracy by being less Democratic?

Every now and then, something Ron Paul says appeals to me.  I’ll see your Tenth Amendment argument and raise you the 17th (Tony Blankley at HuffPo divined from a speech at CPAC in 2009):

As an early 1960s vintage member of the then-new conservative movement, I remember us focusing on the 10th amendment during the 1964 Goldwater campaign. It has been a staple of conservative thought, and the continued dormancy of 10th amendment enforcement has been one of the failures of our now half-century-old movement.

James Von Brunn, Renaissance Man

I can’t tell you how weird it is to see “elderly white supremacist” in print?  We’ve now found that he also dabbled in the arts (via BoingBoing).  TPM has a very complete bio as well as a collection of his various diatribes from around the internet.

You Made Your Bed, That’s Where You Lie [Update]

Update: As expected, the Democrats caved, including local Representatives Pat Murphy and Joe Sestak.  The roll call in the House can be found here, and the Senates tally forthcoming.

In the spring of 1987,  the year of the 200th anniversary of the first Constitutional Convention, President Ronald Reagan began calling for another.  Reagan had been frustrated by Congress’ failure to brovide him with a Balanced Budget Ammendment.  Reagan’s solution was to call for a new Constitutional Convention, as described (but never tested) in Article V of the Constitution, where each state would get delegates to propose a balanced budget ammendment, and then pass it on to the individual state legislatures for approval.  Reagan succeeded in getting agreement from 32 of the required 2/3 of the States, but was eventually blocked by an unlikely coalition of Constitutional defenders, fearful of the seismic changes [pdf] regarding preemptive federalism and the erosion of states’ rights.

Pennsylvania Primary Post-Mortem Ponderings

What does the primary mean? What learnings can be taken away? Did Hillary really win? Did Barack really lose? And what about John McCain?

There are two things to take away – the primary means NOTHING, and the primary means EVERYTHING.

Move over Ron Paul, Digg (and the Internets) PWN Scientology

I’m not sure what the tipping point event was, but the entirety of the internets has declared War on Scientology.

Pissed of the Internets

My guess is that Scientology, as is their usual heavy-handed (including the US Government in Operation Snow White) , litigation-prone, cease-and-desist method, rapidly compelled several internet outlets to pull the creepy Tom Cruise internet video (which, as is always the case with these censorship moments, only makes the subject more desired and more easily available). Currently the entire movie is available in several formats and as a bittorent on the Pirate Bay.

Here’s the short trip to crazyland:

GOP Candidates Self-Destruct

Perhaps it will be McCain vs. Ron Paul for the 2008 GOP nomination?

Fred Thompson has continually run a lazy campaign, as expected.  At each opportunity, he's proven not capable of being a leading man; At best, he'd be cast as a supporting actor, or perhaps in a cameo role.

Romney is due to speak on his Mormon faith this Thursday in Texas, of all places. This Christian Nation of ours seems to distrust Mormonism as a true Christian religion, as the Huckabee surge threatens to swamp Willard and his substantially self-financed campaign.

The One Where I Voice My Support for Ron Paul…

Norquist Katrina Government BathtubNot so fast, you crazy libertarians.

Between digg and crazy college boys, the fandom and fawning for Ron Paul rivals some sort of political 'Tiger Beat'.

Although I don't doubt the sincerity of many libertarians, and welcome their splintering with the GOP, the fact remains that some of them, at their heart, are no more than Republicans who like to smoke pot.

I'll admit, there is an appeal to the skepticism of the modern libertarian. Their goal though, of limited government, when taken to its logical extremes, actually results in the outcomes of GOP activist Grover Norquist, advocating the "drowning of government in the bathtub". Mind you, the GOP still wants to collect taxes for the services they outsource and privatize, they just want them performed outside of governmental oversight and be able to be incentivized by them via campaign contributions.

Here is the win-win for liberals, conservatives, and libertarians…
