Answer Key to the Republican Purity Test

Wow.  Just wow.  Data and analysis.  Here is the survey’s methodology:

The Daily Kos Republican Poll was conducted by Research 2000 from January 20 through January 31, 2010. A total of 2003 self identified Republicans were interviewed nationally by telephone. Those interviewed were selected by the random variation of the last four digits of telephone numbers, nationally.

The margin for error, according to standards customarily used by statisticians, is no more than plus or minus 2% percentage points. This means that there is a 95 percent probability that the “true” figure would fall within that range if the entire self identified Republican population were sampled. The margin for error is higher for any demographic subgroup, such as for gender or region.  Read more...

If he does the full metal neocon as he is being urged to, he should not be deluded in believing the GOP will in any way support him. They will oppose him every step of every initiative. They will call him incompetent if Afghanistan deteriorates, they will call him a terrorist-lover if he withdraws, they will call him a traitor if he does not do everything they want, and they will eventually turn on him and demand withdrawal, just as they did in the Balkans with Clinton.  Obama’s middle way, I fear, is deeper and deeper into a trap, and the abandonment of a historic opportunity to get out.  Read more...

Does the GOP have a USPS problem?

Nobody is buying, nobody is selling, nobody is reading, and nobody is sending mail.   The USPS is a subsidy for business – it ‘costs’ a lot more than $0.43 to send a letter.

The only way to ’save’ the Post Office is to let it run a deficit in bad times until things get better. The GOP controls the conversation, and the Post Office and AMTRAK are their favorite punching bags.  It’s only a matter of time till Republicans want to close the Post Office because FedEx and UPS are more efficient at delivering mail and won’t lose billions per year.  Read more...

If you addressed an e-mail to the wrong person, let slip with an embarrassing typo or simply said something you really, really shouldn't have, Undo Send can be a lifesaver. Or, more accurately, a job-saver.

  • Small Car, Big Shadow — The American, A Magazine of Ideas – Throughout the 1950s Romney inveighed against “dinosaur” size cars. He popularized the phrase “gas guzzler” (at a time when gasoline was about a quarter a gallon!) and he brilliantly finessed the American public’s perceived negative impression of small cars by calling his Ramblers “compacts.” By 1959 the public was at last paying attention. The Nash name (and Hudson’s too) had by then been relegated to the scrap heap of automotive history. But the original 1950 Rambler had become a pop culture icon thanks to a song called “Beep, Beep.” Sung by a now forgotten group called the Playmates, it had made the charts in late 1958 with its whimsical tale of a Cadillac driver who spots a “little Nash Rambler” in his rearview mirror.

  • The Washington Monthly: Please Go Galt! – I am puzzled by one thing, however: the fact that none of the people who advocate "going Galt" seem to have actually done it. I'm not clear whether the point of "going Galt" is to stop doing creative or productive work, as Rand's novel would suggest, or trying to lower one's income, as many of the people quoted in stories about "going Galt" claim. But as best I can tell, the people advocating this are doing neither.
