  • Daily Number: A Scarcity of Car Lovers – Pew Research Center – Americans' romance with the automobile seems to be cooling off a bit. A Pew Research survey conducted in 2006 found that just 23% say they consider their car "something special — more than just a way to get around," barely half of the 43% who felt this way in 1991.

Did Obama ‘Sister Souljah’ Kanye West?

First, some background on ‘the Sister Souljah moment’ from Wikipedia:

The term originates in the 1992 presidential candidacy of Bill Clinton. In an interview published May 13, 1992, the hip-hop MC, author, and political activist Sister Souljah was quoted in the Washington Post as saying, “If Black people kill Black people every day, why not have a week and kill White people?”[1] The remark was part of a longer response to the 1992 Los Angeles riots. The quotation was later reproduced without the context of the complete interview[2] and resulted in wide criticism from the media.

Internally Conflicted over ‘the Domelights Suit’

I have a lot of conflicting feelings over the lawsuit (complaint here as PDF) against Domelights, an internet forum run by an active-duty Philadelphia Police Department Sergeant and allegedly moderated by on-duty police officers over City-owned resources.

Dan McQuade sums it up:

It took longer than I expected, but someone has finally sued Domelights, the unofficial Philadelphia Police Department messageboard. The Daily News reports the site’s owner, who posts under the username McQ, is “believed to be Fred McQuiggan, a Philadelphia police sergeant. McQuiggan, 47, of Torresdale, joined the force in March 1986.” The site is currently bursting at the seams.

  • Wordgeddon | GOOD – Though apocalypse and Armageddon are used interchangeably in this trend, they used to have distinct meanings. The Oxford English Dictionary gives the original sense of apocalypse as “The ‘revelation’ of the future granted to St. John in the isle of Patmos,” which sounds like a good isle to avoid. Not until the late nineteenth century did the term start to mean “a disaster resulting in drastic, irreversible damage to human society or the environment, esp. on a global scale; a cataclysm. Also in weakened use.” I feel safe in saying a-taco-lypse and French-fry-pocalypse fit under the rubric of weakened use.

  • The Religious Makeup of Congress – The charts below highlight key findings from a Pew Forum report, "Faith on the Hill: The Religious Affiliations of Members of Congress." The report shows that while Congress looks very much like the rest of the country, some religious minorities are underrepresented in the House and Senate, while others are overrepresented.

  • Talking Points Memo | The Palin Effect – Palin was a surprising pick– virtually unknown outside Alaska (including, as it turned out, by the McCain campaign itself)– and she lacked experience (a key talking point for McCain). But her effect was supposed to be three fold– a woman and feminist for life, she'd pick up disgruntled Hillary supporters, an avowed Christian, she'd consolidate and energize the religious right, and with her youth and self described Mavericky ways, she'd counter Obama's fresh enthusiasm.

Two months later? Not so much. The Palin Effect exists– but it's not energizing the base. On the contrary. Of the 70 odd conservative politicians, pundits and newspapers that have turned from McCain to endorse Obama this fall, 38 of them have cited Palin as a significant contributor to the decision. Hover over for quotes, and click on the pictures for links. And enjoy.

  • The GOP ticket’s appalling contempt for science and learning. – By Christopher Hitchens – Slate Magazine – This is what the Republican Party has done to us this year: It has placed within reach of the Oval Office a woman who is a religious fanatic and a proud, boastful ignoramus. Those who despise science and learning are not anti-elitist. They are morally and intellectually slothful people who are secretly envious of the educated and the cultured. And those who prate of spiritual warfare and demons are not just “people of faith” but theocratic bullies. On Nov. 4, anyone who cares for the Constitution has a clear duty to repudiate this wickedness and stupidity.
