  • United States Gross National Happiness on Facebook – But grouped together, the status updates of millions of Facebook users from every demographic in the nation can work together to say something about how we as a nation are doing. Measuring how well-off, happy or satisfied with life the citizens of a nation are is part of the Gross National Happiness movement. This graph represents how "happy" the nation is doing from day to day, by looking at how many positive and negative words people are using when they update their status: When people are using more positive words (or fewer negative words) in their status updates than usual, that day is happier than usual!

  • Schneier on Security: Election Fraud in Kentucky – I think this is the first documented case of election fraud in the U.S. using electronic voting machines (there have been lots of documented cases of errors and voting problems, but this one involves actual maliciousness[.]
  • Great photographs of the economic crisis. – - Slate Magazine – Last week, Slate launched "Shoot the Recession," a project in which we asked our readers what the economic crisis looks like to them. The response on the photo-sharing site Flickr, where we set up a group page to collect your contributions, has been bullish. As of this writing, our Flickr pool is home to more than 160 pictures.

  • :::Philebrity…media, culture, music and more::: » Blog Archive » For Sale: The SS United States – as you’ve probably noticed, the great ship has sat in neglect and disrepair just off Delaware Avenue since 1996. Those days could be coming to an end quite soon, though, as the ship is up for sale, and according to this excellent PlanPhilly story by Steven B. Ujifusa, it will most likely go to scrap, providing an utterly awful national metaphor: It would most likely be “towed to Asia, and run aground on a foul, oil-smeared beach,” where it would be destroyed and sold off as hunks of metal to Asian junkmen. Owch. There is a conservancy group, The S.S. United States Conservancy, but it doesn’t look good. So if you’re an enterprising soul with lots of local and national pride, and with millions to spare, why not take a ride down to South Philly and take a look?

  • Why the Republican Party Must Die – Generational Theft and End of Republicans – Esquire – So now all taxes are socialism and any kind of deficit spending is generational theft? This is just crazy talk. But we're used to crazy talk from fringy Republicans. Either they're trying to convince us that Adam and Eve rode dinosaurs or they're insisting that 99 percent of the world's scientists are wrong about global warming — and that they have a Professor of Dentistry at Oral Roberts University who can prove it. That you can pay down the deficit by cutting taxes. That the God of Love who embraced lepers and prostitutes is really the God of Gay-Bashing. It's almost hilarious the things these guys come up with. And now they want us to take their economic ideas seriously.

  • Going rogue inside a big company (a la Best Buy) – (37signals) – Electronics retailing giant Best Buy offers one of the most innovative workplaces around. And much of it is because bold employees there decided to go rogue. For example, Steve Bendt and Gary Koelling are the creators of Blue Shirt Nation (BSN), the massively successful online community for Best Buy employees. Within a year of creating the site, 20,000 (of Best Buy’s 150,000) employees had signed up. They meet there and share knowledge, best practices, ideas for improving the stores, and more.

  • The South Vs. Obama – The Daily Beast – The votes against Obama’s stimulus package came from a southern confederacy of Republicans and conservative Democrats. Their message to America? Drop dead.
  • Philadelphia Magazine: 1978 Called. It Wants Its Newspaper Back – Ross also adds that in January, Tierney took to patrolling the parking garage, watching to see what time employees were arriving to work and asking managers about those who were late. “That’s what I’m getting calls about now,” says Ross. “He’s walking around the parking garage. If he gets hit by a car, it’ll be his own fault.” Tierney’s ownership group, Philadelphia Media Holdings, stopped making interest payments to its creditors over the summer. Thirty-five further editorial layoffs were announced in December. No one knows what tomorrow will bring — except that some tomorrow could mark the end of Philadelphia’s newspapers.
