OF COURSE they did [Flight 93].

July 24th, 2008 · No Comments

Atrios points to a little piece of opening commentary from the trial of Osama Bin Laden’s driver that contradicts the accepted folklore behind Flight 93.

“If they hadn’t shot down the fourth plane it would’ve hit the dome,” Stone, a Navy officer, said in his opening remarks.

The tribunal’s chief prosecutor, Col. Lawrence Morris, later explained that Stone was quoting Hamdan in evidence that will be presented at trial. Morris declined to say if the “dome” was a reference to the U.S. Capitol.

“Virtually no one knew the intended target, but the accused knew,” Stone said.

Iraq as Metaphor

October 5th, 2007 · No Comments

John Stauber has a post at PR Watch that is sourced from Matt Bai's book, The Argument: Billionaires, Bloggers and the Battle to Remake Democratic Politics, where former NY Governor Mario Cuomo speaks to a group of wealthy Democratic activists:

Shortly after the November 2006 election the Democracy Alliance, an exclusive group of about 100 Democratic Party millionaire activists, met in Miami, Florida. Members and their guests heard their keynote speaker and liberal legend Mario Cuomo analyze the Democratic Party in the wake of its stunning electoral victories that had given Democrats control of the US Congress. Cuomo criticized the Democratic Party for lacking vision, big ideas and a winning political argument. His recipe for future Democratic victories was simple: "You seize the biggest idea you can, the biggest idea you can understand. And this is what moves elections."

Cuomo then dared to voice an inconvenient truth: "Now it's 2006 and we're all rejoicing. Why? Because of Iraq. A GIFT. A gift to the Democrats. A lot of whom voted for the war anyway." The former New York governor challenged his partisan audience, "If Iraq is not an issue, then what issues do we have to talk about? … Where does that leave you? It leaves you in the same position you were in in 2004 – without an issue. Because you have no big idea."

Stauber goes on to illustrate why Iraq is a "gift":

The Argument is an important book but Bai muffed the title. He should have titled it “The Gift,” because as Cuomo points out it was primarily the political gift of voter anger and revulsion over a horrific, continuing war that caused them to oust Republicans.

He then goes on to lament how the current Democratic Congressional Leadership is failing to deliver on the voting public's wishes (he is, of course, correct, but that's a whole-another-post).

It's simply too easy to beat the administration over the head with their incompetence regarding Iraq, and that's even if totally ignoring the deceptions and ideology driven mechanisms that created, sold, and marketed this war.  Strangely, most pundits choose to look at the war in isolation, as though it were a unique creature born of unique circumstances.

Groundhog Day.

Animal House Kevin Bacon David Petraues

Just as in each of the last 5-years, immediately prior to the Anniversary of the 9/11 Attacks, some guy dressed like Osama Bin Laden comes out of the ground.  This guy releases more video than Tu-Pac and Biggie combined.

If he sees his shadow, we are guaranteed another Friedman-Unit of War.  Pay no attention to the Black-Beard or the suspicious freezes in the video.  I also find the video interesting, as the President does, specifically as it so perfectly straddles the Conservative talking points of the day.

Attn. Comcast Subscribers (and employees) and Philly Armchair Quarterbacks…

August 23rd, 2007 · No Comments

This should elate approximately 30% of you and disgust the balance.

A newly formed Pro-War astroturf - think false, ideological grassroots organization - group, Freedom Watch (YouTube) has some local connections, as described at Fables of the Reconstruction.  Most prominently, sports fans, is CEO of Comcast-Spectacor Ed Snider (wiki) Comcast-Spectacorp is a partnership with the Comcast Corporation, which manages the sports arenas, the ComcastSportsnet, the 76ers, the Philadelphia Flyers, and some other related ventures.

Via Politico:

A new group, Freedom’s Watch, is launching Wednesday with a $15 million, five-week campaign of TV, radio and Web ads featuring military veterans that is aimed at retaining support in Congress for President Bush’s “surge” policy on Iraq.

The Orwellian-named Freedom Watch, helmed by Plamegate-accomplice Ari Fleischer has an interesting cast of characters.

Again, from FotR:

The board consists of Blakeman; [Ari] Fleischer; Mel Sembler, a Florida Republican who was Bush’s ambassador to Italy; William P. Weidner, president and chief operating officer of the Las Vegas Sands Corp.; and Matt Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition.

The donors include Sembler; Anthony Gioia, a Buffalo businessman who was Bush’s ambassador to Malta; Kevin Moley, who was Bush’s ambassador to the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in Geneva; Howard Leach, a former Republican National Committee finance chairman who was Bush’s ambassador to France; Dr. John Templeton of Pennsylvania, chairman and president of the John Templeton Foundation; Ed Snider, chairman of Comcast Spectacor, the huge Philadelphia sports and entertainment firm; Sheldon Adelson, chairman of the Las Vegas Sands Corp. and ranked by Forbes magazine as the third-wealthiest American; and Richard Fox, who is chairman of the Jewish Policy Center and was Pennsylvania State Chairman of the Reagan/Bush campaign in 1980.

 [...]

Richard Fox is local. Comcast, as the article says, is right here in Center City Philly. So Philly is subsidizing pro-war propaganda. Wonderful. The Templeton Foundation is located in a Philadelphia suburb, and has a right-wing track record.

The TV-buys are interesting in that they attack both Democrats and any moderate Republicans who have been less than 100% loyal to the President, and seem to imply that the participation in our Democracy is tantamount to treason and "stabbing the troops in the back"

YouTube Preview Image

The ads are an attempt to grab the security-moms and armchair generals by having Laura and Vicky relate the sacrifices of their sons, Travis and Jesse, as well as linking retreat from Iraq with retreat from Vietnam, and further attempting to confuse Osama Bin Laden's Al Qaeda with the insurgents in Iraq.  As September draws nearer, expect more political attacks designed to attack any criticism of the effectiveness of "the surge".

Cowards, all [Cheney supporters].

June 25th, 2007 · No Comments

I'm trying to find defenders of Cheney somewhere online, but so far all I've gotten are the deranged at LGF in the comment thread and the occasional drive-by troll in the WaPo comment thread, comments such as these:

Let's think for a second about the Dem's vs. the Republicans. Bobby Kennedy ran the black bag operation on Castro. Remember he was the Attorney General. Failed. Jimmy Carter did not support our friend the Shah of Iran and turned that country over to a bunch of nuts. He sent a small group without any backup into Iran to rescue the hostages. Failed. Clinton sent a few tomahawks into a few places while he was being serviced by Monica. Failed to stop any threats anywhere. But Monica did a good job for him and she was rejected after Clinton was finished with her, like all of the other young girls he abused. VP Cheney has run the war on terrorist and the United States has not been attacked since. In war time I will stick with the tough guys. When it is over we will give it back to the Dem's and the media to run for awhile.

I am disgusted that so many people do not see that we are in a world war with people who do not follow any part of the Geneva Convention. Have all of you forgotten 9/11 and the beheadings? Just today it was in the news that the Talliban strapped and explosive vest on a 6 year old and told him to touch wires together. Luckily, he didnt understand and asked an Afgani officer to show him how. Waterboarding may be frightening, but it does not compare with the horrifying gassing of the Kurds, the payment to families of suicide bombers, or the beheading of Danny Pearl, not to mention kidnapping for money and the wish to erase Isreal from the face of the earth. I am proud of Richard Bruce Cheney's resolve to try and protect the people of this country. This war, which actually started way before 9/11, will contnue long after he is out of office. And if we give in to this nonsense, we will be the ones who will pay.

Never have I ever heard such flaming hatred from people in all my life. Do you have even a hint of what those Heathens want to do to you before they cut your heads off? All you care about is hating Bush, well get over it! I hope they make them all talk, it saves lives, MINE! screw you people. Give me that flame thrower and I'll help get that info. we need.

How about you guys investigate and write something about the Democrats? How about you read Walter Perryman's book "Unfounded Loyalty." This once stanch Democrat African-American author wrote, "The terrorist attacks by the Democrats and their terrorist supporters (KKK, etc…) were so horrendous, mamy believe that fromt he 1800s to the early 1900s this political party killed more people and destroyed more lives than the terrorist attacks attributed to Osama Bin Laden, the Al Qaeda, and the modern day Taliban of Afganistan."

No one held the Democrats accountable for the deaths of millions within the United States Why don't you research this part of America's history? Truth be told, there would have been no need for a Civil Rights movement if the Democrats hadn't terrorized this country for 100 years after the Civil War ended. And, we expect the insurgency to end in Iraq? According to my clock we have another 94 years to go!

P.S. Your articles are so blatantly bias that it's a wonder readers continue to slip away from the liberal media's grasp. Get a clue. I, for one, am tired of it.

s for the war…it is a war and it's not always pretty. It's time to depart from mamby pamby land and develop a backbone, otherwise we'll all end up back in the primordial ooze!

The bleeding heart liberals and terrorist bill of rights crowd that are so against these tactics are the same people who complained 'WE DIDNT CONNECT THE DOTS and bush was asleep at the switch and therefore he was responsible for 9/11. George tenet and michael schuerer [the head of the bin laden unit 98 till 02] have testified that these tactics haved saved " thousands if not hundreds of thousands" of american lives. the constitution is not a suicide pact, astatement that hasnt sunken in to liberal judges and the hate bush crowd. even john mccain has been blinded by his time as a POW. to think that if we dont use enhanced methods ,[NOT TORTURE] will change terrorists minds to not cut off heads is laughable ! SADDLY IT WILL TAKE ANOTHER MASSIVE ATTACK FOR THIS CROWD OF TERRORIST SYMPATHIZERS TO WAKE UP AND SEE HOW THE PRES. AND VICE PRES. HAVE USED NSA WIRETAPPING,ENHANCED QUESTIONING AND RENDITIONS TO HELP TO PROTECT THE U.S.

Posted by: jjoyce6018 | June 25, 2007 05:57 AM

The liberal press and the democrats again find themeselves in the comfortable position of criticizing instead of leading.

Go after Bush if you want,Cheney the whole crew, I'll join you, but for God's sake don't make excuses for the rotten low lifes that would kill our people and families given half a chance.

Cruelity ? give me a break, fat, overpaid, journalists think cruelty is not having sugar with your coffee, or toilet paper in the bathroom !

Posted by: l_dotter | June 25, 2007 06:13 AM

I'd rather live under Cheney than to die under the horrors of the regime of these killer terrorists. Wake UP!

First, the Washington Post ought to do a
nice story about the quality of the vitriol
inspired by this story. What is it that's
said about people calling names, when they
lack a good argument?
Second, when Clinton did the things he did,
such as bombing Serbia, which posed no threat to the US, would that have been an
impeachable offense, according to the anti-
Bush people?
Third, in a war, is it permissible to use
methods that promote victory, or should one
thread lightly, lest feelings be hurt?
Finally, given some recent statistics about
the voting records and (political) finan-
cials of journalists, would it be fair to
assume the article being discussed was authored by a Democrat?

Before you get all weepy-eyed, and before the "press" heralds him as a divisive but religious force, let's review some of his "highlights" [Positive Atheism via MeFi]:

If you're not a born-again Christian, you're a failure as a human being.
