  • Born Poor? | Santa Fe Reporter – Bowles’ most recent paper, published in the October 2009 issue of Science, was a huge project with 25 collaborators. It examines how wealth is transferred from parents to children in hunter-gatherer societies versus agricultural societies.
    That might seem distant from the busy unemployment offices on Guadalupe Street. But everyone can relate to his chosen subject: inequality. He studies the economic differences between people with the same discipline that Jane Goodall studies chimpanzees or Stephen Hawking studies the cosmos.

  • What Obama’s Doing With Fox News « Whatever – I think some people are under the impression that the White House wants Fox News to disappear. Nothing, I suspect, could be further from the truth. The White House is in fact delighted that Fox News and its merry cast of commentators exists. Nor is the White House vexed that its every pronouncement concerning Fox News solidifies Fox’s core audience; that’s actually the plan. The point is not to moderate Fox News by accusing it of being biased/not a real news organization/running or being the propoganda arm of the GOP; if anything, the point is to make it more extreme in the views it airs.

  • Seth’s Blog: The CPM gap – Here's the thing: advertisers treat prospects online as targets, as victims, as people to subject to interruption. Conferences treat attendees as royalty, as paying customers who invested time and money to be there.

    And that's the difference. As long as your site is about something else and the ads are a distraction, you'll see CPM rates drop. As soon as you (or the advertisers) figure out that creating online communities aligned with the advertising, where attendance is a choice by the consumer, then you're creating genuine value.

On Twitter, the FTC, and Politics…

A couple of observations, which on the surface are barely related.

First, Twitter has really done nothing for the Iranian people, save giving them a place to speak.  The only other outcome has been dead Iranians.  Twitter alone is making the Iranian government do nothing other than crack down.  Hard.

In other news, the FTC is contemplating investigating blog payola, where some bloggers make compensated messages as advertising without disclosure.  The thought is that the few bloggers who are compensated have a disproportionate impact as opinion influencers.

  • Color Theory for Cinematographers – Outside Hollywood – Color is such a powerful part of cinema storytelling that we should never neglect it. And despite the power of modern color correction tools, we can never leave it chance or expect to come up with a highly effective Ridley-Scott-style color script [of Blackhawk Down] in post. All the Cs of cinematography take careful thought and a lot of planning to use properly, but when plotted out, they add a tremendous amount of storytelling power.
