Instant DVD Gratification is worth a Premium

I love me some Redbox.  I’m ashamed to admit that I’m probably a good 5-years behind on movies I want to see.  Buying any DVD (with the exception of kids’ movies) is a waste of money, in my opinion.  I contemplated signing up for Netflix, but I doubt I would utilize the service enough to justify the expense.  Redbox neatly fills that void by allowing me to pick up new releases at my convenience, all for the low price of $1 plus tax.

  • Anderson Analytics — Social Networking Service User Typing Tool – The segmentation model above is based on several variables from our recent research study. However, we have selected just a couple of the variables from the model above which do a fairly good job at predicting someone's membership in one of the segments. If you would like to try the simpler typing model to see which of the segments you are closest to you may do so here.

  • A Pocket Guide to Social Media and Kids | Nielsen Wire – SUMMARY: When is a phone not a phone? In the hands of children and tweens, today’s cell phones are primarily used as text messaging devices, cameras, gaming consoles, video viewers, MP3 players, and incidentally, as mobile phones via the speaker capability so their friends can chime in on the call. Parents are getting dialed in to the social media phenomenon and beginning to understand—and limit—how children use new media.

  • The Steve Rubel Lifestream – Why Lifestream? To Model Leonardo Da Vinci – I like to think of a lifestreaming as today's digital equivalent of Leonardo Da Vinci's notebooks. (Make no mistake, I am no Da Vinci nor do I think of myself in such a way. It's purely an aspirational metaphor.) Da Vinci recorded notes, drawings, questions and more in his notebooks. Some of these were quite mundane (grocery lists and doodles), others were not. But the body of work was over time, a view of a one individual's mind (in his case a great one).

  • What is Slow-Parenting? – Motherlode Blog – NYTimes.com – Slow parents understand that childrearing should not be a cross between a competitive sport and product-development. It is not a project; it’s a journey. Slow parenting is about giving kids lots of love and attention with no conditions attached.

  • Color Theory for Cinematographers – Outside Hollywood – Color is such a powerful part of cinema storytelling that we should never neglect it. And despite the power of modern color correction tools, we can never leave it chance or expect to come up with a highly effective Ridley-Scott-style color script [of Blackhawk Down] in post. All the Cs of cinematography take careful thought and a lot of planning to use properly, but when plotted out, they add a tremendous amount of storytelling power.

  • PsyBlog: Leaders Emerge by Talking First and Most Often – Crucially, though, the study showed that not only did a leader's dominant behaviour of itself encourage others to see that person as competent, but this was true even though their suggestions to the group were no better, or even worse than others. In reality the leaders did not always make the best contribution to the task, but their voices were usually heard first and most often.

Hollywood’s End

What passes for quality content from Hollywood’s music, film, and TV media complex is also getting squeezed.  All of the above are going to be pushing more crap music, deemphasizing broadcast network TV, more reality-TV, late-night retreads, and more remakes and sequel movies from Hollywood.  Should they capture the audiences’ attention, the cost cutting measures should result in a financial windfall for content producers, as the cost of production is significantly lower.  If it doesn’t, expect audiences to leave, taking advertising dollars with them.  People, it’s time to get acquainted with GarageBand, YouTube, podcasts, and some old, crude knowledge transmission devices known as ‘books’.
