The Future of Mobile Internet

Morgan Stanley analyst Mary Meeker [wiki] has a killer presentation (via Clusterstock) on the future of mobile internet.  You can view the long (671-slides in the deck!) or the shorter 104-slide deck, embedded below).

Amazon Listmania: Network Attached Storage

Now that my household is desktop-free (with his-and-her’s laptops), it’s difficult to share photos, music, and documents across our wireless network.  I previously had Orb running on the desktop, which allowed me to share files as well as use my at-home desktop’s TV-card to watch TV anywhere, including via capable mobile devices.

At some point in the near future, I plan on adding a Network Attached Storage device to my network.  My criteria is the ability to access files across both my network at home and anywhere via the internet, the ability to stream media off the drive, and the ability to automate backups.  I’ve created an Amazon Listmania for “Networked Attached Storage” to help share my choices with everyone.  Fell free to use the list as well, and comment in the links here with your own feedback, comments, and suggestions.

  • A Pocket Guide to Social Media and Kids | Nielsen Wire – SUMMARY: When is a phone not a phone? In the hands of children and tweens, today’s cell phones are primarily used as text messaging devices, cameras, gaming consoles, video viewers, MP3 players, and incidentally, as mobile phones via the speaker capability so their friends can chime in on the call. Parents are getting dialed in to the social media phenomenon and beginning to understand—and limit—how children use new media.

  • Nokia in Trouble? How Fast Can a Mobile Device Giant React? | MEOW! Blog – The key takeaway from this analysis is that the industry standard product cycle for an integrated, platform based product is 5 to 8 years and if one competitor can achieve a 2 to 3 year cycle, then the more nimble competitor can “turn inside” the industry and, within two cycles, dominate it. Although smaller competitors are able to turn product faster, they are usually unable to sustain the platform heavy lifting (which takes an order of magnitude more effort/assets).

  • The Simple Dollar » The Truth About Grocery Store Flyers – So, a few weeks ago, when I took a long look at the flyers from my grocery stores of choice, I happened to notice that some of the “big sales” listed in the flyer weren’t on sale at all. The price was exactly the same as what I usually paid.

What gives? I did some research – calling and emailing a few people I know in the grocery business – and I came up with a few interesting facts about grocery store flyers.

Netbook Lust

I have found myself increasingly lusting for a netbook.  The only thing holding me back, save a lack of funds, is whether or not the smaller sized keyboards are useable.  It’s no surprise that netbooks are extremely popular, given perfectly appropriate feature sets at affordable prices, putting mobile, wireless computing in reach of those typically left behind.

If you’re not sure if a netbook is for you, DVICE has a rundown of common features and Lifehacker runs down their list of top five user-submitted faves.  On the basis of specs, considering weight, keyboard size, battery life, options and features, and filtered for price, I think my top five choices would be the Samsung NC10, the Lenovo S10, the Dell Inspiron Mini 12, the Acer Aspire One, and the ASUS EEEPC 1000HE.
