Amazon Listmania: Network Attached Storage

Now that my household is desktop-free (with his-and-her’s laptops), it’s difficult to share photos, music, and documents across our wireless network.  I previously had Orb running on the desktop, which allowed me to share files as well as use my at-home desktop’s TV-card to watch TV anywhere, including via capable mobile devices.

At some point in the near future, I plan on adding a Network Attached Storage device to my network.  My criteria is the ability to access files across both my network at home and anywhere via the internet, the ability to stream media off the drive, and the ability to automate backups.  I’ve created an Amazon Listmania for “Networked Attached Storage” to help share my choices with everyone.  Fell free to use the list as well, and comment in the links here with your own feedback, comments, and suggestions.

Netbook Lust

I have found myself increasingly lusting for a netbook.  The only thing holding me back, save a lack of funds, is whether or not the smaller sized keyboards are useable.  It’s no surprise that netbooks are extremely popular, given perfectly appropriate feature sets at affordable prices, putting mobile, wireless computing in reach of those typically left behind.

If you’re not sure if a netbook is for you, DVICE has a rundown of common features and Lifehacker runs down their list of top five user-submitted faves.  On the basis of specs, considering weight, keyboard size, battery life, options and features, and filtered for price, I think my top five choices would be the Samsung NC10, the Lenovo S10, the Dell Inspiron Mini 12, the Acer Aspire One, and the ASUS EEEPC 1000HE.

  • What does Barack Obama’s brain look like?: Scientific American Blog – The tendency to get stuck to beliefs is especially worrying when it affects politicians’ decision making, but Lehrer credits president-elect Obama with having a nuanced understanding of the human mind’s potential pitfalls. Obama, he says, is especially skilled at thinking about thinking: “I imagine that if you took a scan of his brain, you would see lots of activity in the prefrontal cortex, which doesn’t mean that he doesn’t experience the primal emotions that come from the amygdala.”

  • http://benfry.com/allstreets/ – This visualization by Ben Fry depicts all of the streets in the lower 48 United States: an image of 26 million individual road segments. No other features (such as outlines or geographic features) have been added to this image, however they emerge as roads avoid mountains, and sparse areas convey low population. Alaska and Hawaii were initially left out for simplicity's sake, but then Ben Fry felt guilty because of the sad emails he received. However, he made the final decision of leaving them out permanently because the two states didn't "work", since there aren't enough roads to outline their shape.
