24 as ham-handed political theater.

I clearly have been paying too much attention to inside-baseball political maneuvering, semantics, and framing.  I couldn’t help watching 24 and thinking about what the uberwingnuts behind the camera and the Conservative boobs in front of the tube will take away and employ as talking points.

23:58 Can Jack Bauer defeat the Elephant in the Room?

I bailed on Fox's 24 very early in this season – it just became too formulaic, too predictable, and just plain ridiculous.  This week, the readers of Jump the Shark have voted, and a sizable number said that indeed, 24 had jumped the shark (although a not-insignificant amount said it had happened several seasons ago).

Smerconish: Head Strong, Apply Directly to Forehead.

Having never made an effort to either listen to or read Michael Smerconish, I foolishly tossed him aside with all the other Right-Wing Radio flunkies.  After reading his inaugural Inquirer column, I came away suprisingly indifferent.  He comes across as someone I largely agree with on a majority of issues, but I suspect if pushed for clarification, the differences would be more apparent.

In his "Suburban Manifesto" column in this Sunday's Inky (amusingly filed under Philly Women), he starts off predictably, stating that the editorial page is "[too] liberal too often", and that he is in not a "Kool-Aid drinker".

24 Jumps the Shark.

I knew that this season would be the one I could no longer stand – where Jack Bauer again sacrifices all for God and Country.  The thought of Bauer in a Chinese prison, silent for 2-years, returning under condition of death at the hands of one terrorist (in exchange for the location of another), all the while looking like Jesus H. Christ, is just too much.  I'll watch it anyway, but now it is clearly farce.

In one regard, the story might play out as a cautious tale of a possible future, one with wholesale arrest of Muslims, detention centers, and the promise of Bauers "not dying for nothing", but rather his "dying for something".

Then there's also the plentiful product placements, covering both Sprint and Sony products…
