  • Born Poor? | Santa Fe Reporter – Bowles’ most recent paper, published in the October 2009 issue of Science, was a huge project with 25 collaborators. It examines how wealth is transferred from parents to children in hunter-gatherer societies versus agricultural societies.
    That might seem distant from the busy unemployment offices on Guadalupe Street. But everyone can relate to his chosen subject: inequality. He studies the economic differences between people with the same discipline that Jane Goodall studies chimpanzees or Stephen Hawking studies the cosmos.

Steve Jobs saw his shadow.

To be fair, I think that the iPad will be a success for Apple, but will not reverse Apples sliding mobile market share.  Job’s made some statements in a private forum that have since leaked out which address some of the criticisms.

iFail

I’m just not seeing the win.

Sure, the fanboy who has iEverything will grab one.  I likewise suppose that the person who would buy one of Apple’s other fine products but were deterred by the relative high price may also consider one.  Like others have mentioned, the iPad (horrible name, BTW.  iSlate, iBook, and iTablet would have been much better IMHO) has a series of shortcomings that are inexcusable:  Read more...

Tablets could ruin everything

Speculated mock-up of Apple’s forthcoming tablet product.

 

I’m watching all the speculation over Apple soon-to-be unveiled Tablet product, due to be revealed on 1/26/2010.   Steve Job’s had questioned the wisdom of a tablet (NYTimes via John Gruber):

Another former Apple executive who was there at the time said the tablets kept getting shelved at Apple because Mr. Jobs, whose incisive critiques are often memorable, asked, in essence, what they were good for besides surfing the Web in the bathroom.  Read more...

    As we now know, Major Hassan was not killed, but rather captured alive. Reports of a second – and third – shooter also now appear to be inaccurate. Whether someone was shot “in the balls” hasn’t been publicly confirmed and, for the sake the of the victim’s privacy, let’s hope it never is – but the point is that many of Moore’s eye-witness reports weren’t worth the bits they were written on. They had no value whatsoever, except as entertainment and tragi-porn.

But he analyzes the likely effects of torture on the brain, based on the vast existing literature on the effects of extreme stress on motivation, mood and memory, using both animals and humans.

    He concludes, essentially, that torture is likely to destroy the very memories it’s trying to extract.
