  • The Monkey Cage: Health Care Reform and the Geography of the Uninsured – Last night at his 100-Day press conference, President Obama again promised that health care reform would be a high priority, right behind the economy in the first year. This raised a question in my mind; is there a geographic constituency for health care reform? What might it look like?

Now how many ‘bad banks’?

In an April 2008 post titled “Which one’s are the bad banks, anyway?”, I noted that the secretive FDIC list included some 76 institutions.  The list is currently at 171.  While both of those numbers are less than the total number of bank failures during the Great Depression and the Savings and Loan Crisis, the amount of money in play makes the case as to why this situation is comparable if not worse.

“Will it be like the Great Depression?”

Yesterday was one of the few times my wife engaged me on politics and economics. (If anything, she usually chastises me for being too interested). She plainly asked me what’s going on and what it means for us. She asked if I thought it would be like the Great Depression, with people out of work, waiting in line at soup kitchens. I reflexively answered yes, and then spelled out my rationale.

After having the time to reflect on the question, my answers, the bailout, and the landscape as I see it, I can now say that I may have been wrong.

George Carlin is Dead.

George Carlin is dead.  In his own words:

I’m getting old. And it’s okay. Because thanks to our fear of death in this country I won’t have to die. I’ll pass away. Or I’ll expire, like a magazine subscription. If it happens in the hospital they’ll call it a terminal episode. The insurance company will refer to it as negative patient care outcome.

I agree that he wouldn’t want to be eulogized, so instead reminisce at some of his bits (with more here with some memorable quotations).
