O’Biden 2008
ABC News provides a Nightly News segment introducing the nation to Joe Biden:
His dominant positive characteristic is also his greatest weakness – the propensity to speak his mind. Fortunately, it has had a positive outcome, with Biden leveraging the latest McCain gaffe of not knowing how many houses he owns into a zinger soundbite [via TPM]:
“Your kitchen table is like mine, you sit there at night after you put the kids to bed and you talk about what you need. That’s not a worry John McCain has to worry about. He’ll have to figure out which of the seven kitchen tables to sit at.”
Early polling data shows Biden has minimally affected Obama’s chances, although there are some interesting data points. Simply put, it wasn’t much of a surprise to the press nor a game changer for the American voter. Expect much more attention to be paid to John McCain’s choice for Veep, particularly in regards to age, religiosity, and temperament. In the meantime, expect the media narrative to focus on the disgruntled (and manufactured) former-Hillary supporters who back McCain over Obama, and the coincidentally-themed advertising from the McCain Camp.
Many in the liberal blogosphere are somewhat “meh” (see Hullaballoo, All Spin Zone, Firedoglake, and the G-Spot) with regards to Biden. He was my personal favorite, although I could have lived with Hillary if need be. All told, Biden is Obama’s best choice, bringing to the campaign a compelling personal story, Republican supporters in Congress, a variety of American electoral firsts, and a geographical demographic advantage.
I look forward to the Veep debates between Biden and McCain’s probable pick, Willard Mitt Romney.

Why’d He’s on the Moon? [Update]
Update: I wouldn’t even know about this story if it wasn’t for Phillybits.
It was probably 20-years ago, when I was a wee-lad at Northeast Catholic High School, that I first heard Gil Scott Heron. Mind you, in my working class, nearly all-white neighborhood and school, there’s no way that Heron would come up in conversation or in academics. No, I heard it on Howard Stern – who basically helped raise me. Howard had a very race-centric shtick at that time (late 1980s), and Heron’s “Whiteys on the Moon” was exemplary of what my kind of white-folk grated against – being blamed for the wronging of blacks several generations ago, with a feeling that it was totally unwarranted. Frustrations over crime, the Section-8′ing of the neighborhoods, and a decline in the comparative advantage for whites (particularly males) certainly enabled a hostile posture on race.

Obama and Appalachia: Not Just Race, Income, or Education
Mark Nickolas has posted that Hillary needs to run for President of Appalachia, confirmed by her strong performance last night in West Virginia. It is tempting to disregard this electoral preference on surface faultline demography like race, age, poorest, or education, but Josh Marshall at TPM hints at something more.

Self-Evident Truths.
Those of us on the left-leaning side of politics (or just the non-right side, in some cases) tend to think that the great unwashed aren't intellectually equipped to see through the muck kicked up by the John Gibsons, Ann Coulters, Melanie Morgans, Glenn Becks, and Bill O'Reillys of the right (and further enflamed by the Rupert Murdoch owned New York Post and Foxnews). Case in point, the media character-assasinating mob-hit on Barrack Obama by "some people" (stating he attended a madrassa as a child, he smokes, he had used drugs in the past, his middle name is Hussein, questioning his loyalty, Christianity, etc.) breathlessly worded as a psuedo-attack via Hillary Clinton and an attempt to get the mouth-breathers to reject him via kneejerk reaction, thinking he is the "Mesapotamian"Mohammaded Candidate".
