100% of the Inquirer for only -25% Off, Starting Tomorrow…

February 3rd, 2008 · No Comments

The struggling Philadelphia Inquirer, helmed by Neo-Press Lord Brian Tierney is offsetting declining advertising revenue with threats of ‘outsourcing’ and layoffs as well as a price increase of $0.25. a short front page paragraph explains the price changes. Will this be enough to stave the paper’s ongoing decline, despite two instances of flying pigs?

In other news, the Inky’s idea of fair-and-balanced is a front page which gives the media-anointed likely Republican Presidential nominee Senator John McCain two thirds of the photo space related to the story. Senators Clinton and Obama meanwhile must share the balance, with 1/6 of the space for each. I suppose this innoculates them from cries of liberal media.

Populism: Edwards and Huckabee - Uncoupling Religion, Economics, and Politics

January 5th, 2008 · 2 Comments

The rise of Mike Huckabee and John Edwards unexpectedly strong finish in Iowa is a strong appeal away from establishment rhetoric towards populist values, with predictable results.  There been scores of economic impact coverage framing the cost of Edwards economic populism such that you could think it was a resurgence of socialism or communism.  The right is about to unleash a blue-blood jihad against the corn-suckers of Iowa and other religious adherents, attempting to torpedo Huckabee while promoting the next annointed GOP nominee, Rudy Giuliani Mitt Romney Fred Thompson John McCain.  Since these folks don't particularly care (nor are aware of) the chattering classes, they will likely be unmoved by their criticism (although the corporate and hawk wings of the party will likely open their wallets).  The end result of which will end up with a blessing for liberals and progressives - a disenchanted Evangelical grassroots movement that will likely stay home in November, 2008, and possibly write off the GOP for a generation or more.

GOP Candidates Self-Destruct

December 3rd, 2007 · No Comments

Perhaps it will be McCain vs. Ron Paul for the 2008 GOP nomination?

Fred Thompson has continually run a lazy campaign, as expected.  At each opportunity, he's proven not capable of being a leading man; At best, he'd be cast as a supporting actor, or perhaps in a cameo role.

Romney is due to speak on his Mormon faith this Thursday in Texas, of all places. This Christian Nation of ours seems to distrust Mormonism as a true Christian religion, as the Huckabee surge threatens to swamp Willard and his substantially self-financed campaign.

Random Thoughts…

The first person who interjects Latin into an online argument has already lost.

Will Fred Thompson hottie-wife hurt or help him with the base?

If the 2008 Presidential Race becomes a Tussle in Tennessee between Gore and Thompson, who wins?

Industry, government, and the media are in big trouble if they don't try to understand webculture, particularly as it relates to sarcasm, satire and parody, piracy and intellectual property, memes, and game culture.

Pundits who are quick to label and demean online critics would do well to examine the survey results and comare them to their own work and academic experience as well as that of their viewers and readers.

If Congress is going to make persecution of college students an easy way to milk campaign contributions from the record labels and the RIAA (by targeting the 19 most-offending Universities and Colleges), then it is only fair that the  Young Voters make certain to work for primary challenges or voting those politicians out of office.

The problem with most internet startups is that they are inventors and not innovators - in most cases, their only future plans are to get noticed and acquired by one of the big-5 (Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL, or Fox Interactive) or to eek out a living based on Adsense earnings.

Urban areas need to monopolize on their futures to attract intellectual capital, infrastructure improvements, entrepenuers, and enterprise.  In the coming cruch, be it space, technology, or energy, cities are best equipped to handle the new challenges.
