The First Letter from Drucker to the Roman Catholics

I spent an evening attending my local parish’s financial report with specific interest as to the continued operation of the parish school. It appears that there is a financial shortfall for the school which is heavily subsidized by the church.

I mentioned to the pastor what Peter Drucker stated in his seminal work – Innovation and Entrepreneurship – regarding demographic shifts – an aging population, smaller family sizes, less weddings, more funerals, and fewer baptisms, and how this has precipitated the financial crisis, and not insufficient religious worship (and tithings).

8% Sales Tax in Philadelphia Starts Today!

The sales tax increase may be an ideological cause for concern, but it certainly isn’t a rational one.

People talk about going to the outside counties (ie. Bucks, Chester, etc., at a 6% sales tax) or going to Delaware (for a 0% sales tax).  I would only do this for big purchases (note cars are taxes where they are registered, not purchased), and I would likely do that regardless of the Philadelphia sales tax anyway.

In defense of Nick Miccarelli [Though not an endorsement].

There’s a Democratic-sponsored attack ad that is somewhat unfair to Ridley Park native, University of Pennsylvania graduate, and Army veteran of both Iraq and Bosnia that makes somewhat unfair and groundless criticism of 26-year old baby-faced Miccarelli.

The ad, which I’ve only seen aired once on local (Delco) cable-TV hits Miccarelli for inaction regarding actions, both Congressional and Presidential that had effect on Delaware County.  The ad knocks Miccarelli for not taking action, either by advocating as leader of the College Republicans or as a campaign aid to intervene.  Of course, this is unfair.  In 2004, Miccarelli, although already a veteran, was merely 23, and serving on a variety of campaigns.  Although he made have had access to a handful of political decisionmakers, the influence of Miccarelli was essentially no more than that of the average Delco constituent.  Furthermore, the need to burnish his political resume and cultivate ideological bonafides means that he in no way could deviate from the company line.

Delco, the FAA, PHL, and Robert Moses’ Traffic Paradox

Come 12/17, my life is going to get considerably more noisy.

It is on this date that the FAA will change flight plans allowing departing aircraft from Philadelphia International by flying west over residential Delaware County as opposed to flight plans that take flights north or south over the Delaware River and largely industrial areas.

The FAA is stating that this aerial land grab (remember, the county may own the majority of the land the airport sits on, but does not own the skies) is necessary to avert gridlock on the tarmac.

Darby Township Memorial Day Disgrace.

This morning, I saw two fire-engines up the street, which I assumed was the Memorial Day observance for the township.  The DelcoTimes stated this…

Briarcliffe American Legion Post 761 will hold its Memorial Day services at 11 a.m. Monday on the corner of Ashland and Bartram avenues in Darby Township. Guests will include township commissioner Larry Patterson, township manager Jack Ryan, police chief Robert Thompson, magistrates Leonard McDevitt and Steven Sandone. Keynote speaker will be Thomas Judge and post Commander Richard Ellis will serve as emcee. Food and refreshments will follow at the post and the public is invited.

Oh, lookie here!

From Attytood:

Other the weekend, the good folks over at Talking Points Memo steered up to this report out of Pittsburgh, asking some hard but fair questions about the U.S. Attorney there, Mary Beth Buchanan, and her aggressive prosecutions of local Democrats.

Wonder if anyone is asking the same questions here in Philly. It's not like the U.S. Attorney here is the former campaign manager for Rick Santorum or Arlen Specter or anything…

Oh wait, he is

Couldn't possibly be the same Pat Meehan, could it? (From the Google cache of InsiderPA):

Pat Meehan: The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District still has to resolve his office’s long investigation into state Sen. Vince Fumo, the South Philadelphia Democratic powerbroker, and his name is mud in Philadelphia for bugging Mayor John Street’s office and still not coming up with an indictment of Street.

But he, along with Corbett, has an internal party charisma, and a fan club within the GOP, who are very strongly for him. He was campaign manager for Arlen Specter in his tough 1992 general election against Democrat Lynn Yeakel and eastern campaign manager for Rick Santorum in 1994. Not too many were in the inner circle of both of the state’s top Republicans 12 years ago. Meehan was. Later, despite a lack of criminal law experience, was elected district attorney of Delaware County with the backing of the local GOP.

Hmm… Wonder what Thomas Judge. Sr. and Charlie Sexton, Delco two GOP strongmen, had to do with that appointment?

Dear Delco, Are you as stupid as they want you to be (Part 1)?

It’s almost unbearable, the onslaught of negative TV political advertisements.  So and so did this, and he or she did that, all meaningless political babble designed to punch your hot buttons without a shred of legitimacy or truthfulness.

Let’s tale a moment and review a trio of Curt Weldon campaign mailers that arrived on my door.

DelcoDems Continue to Disappoint Me

This MUST stop.  The only reason that we have one-party rule in this county (and in individual boroughs and school boards) is because the party, on a county and to a lesser extent, state level fails to provide compelling alternatives.  And it shows in the fundraising (via the DelcoTimes):

As always, the Republicans had a lot more cash to spend on literature, mailings, signs, sample ballots and Election Day "street money." They even ran short Cartisano/Whelan commercials on ESPN, Fox News, MSNBC and other cable channels.
