  • Gore Vidal’s United States of fury – Americas, World – The Independent – When did this happen to Gore Vidal? When did he go from righteous – and right – opposition to atrocities carried out by his own government, to justifying any atrocity against it, no matter how extreme? When I ask him, his scowl turns to a sneer, and he says I am ignorant and clearly haven't read anything. I decide to try a different approach. I ask him – if there were more people like McVeigh, would that be a good thing? There is a crack in his hauteur, and he says: "It strikes me as a perfect nightmare. Of course I don't want more people like McVeigh. Since Americans refuse to think about anything, being incapable I suspect of thought, then they're not going to come to any conclusions except mistaken ones."

Daily Links for October 1st through October 2nd

All excerpts are quoted from the respective link(s).

  • Op-Ed Columnist – The Wizard of Beck – NYTimes.com – They pay more attention to Rush’s imaginary millions than to the real voters down the street. The Republican Party is unpopular because it’s more interested in pleasing Rush’s ghosts than actual people. The party is leaderless right now because nobody has the guts to step outside the rigid parameters enforced by the radio jocks and create a new party identity. The party is losing because it has adopted a radio entertainer’s niche-building strategy, while abandoning the politician’s coalition-building strategy.

Peter Jennings passes…the kind of perspective you can only get from a MeFi post’s comments

Of all the contemporary anchors, Jennings’ was by far my favorite. When I saw the internets reporting that ABC was notifying it’s affiliates to prepare for his imminent death, I was immediately saddened. Like John Paul II was to the papacy, Ronald Reagan to the Presidency, and Optimus Prime to the Autobots, so too was Peter Jennings to broadcast national news for my generation.
