  • Born Poor? | Santa Fe Reporter – Bowles’ most recent paper, published in the October 2009 issue of Science, was a huge project with 25 collaborators. It examines how wealth is transferred from parents to children in hunter-gatherer societies versus agricultural societies.
That might seem distant from the busy unemployment offices on Guadalupe Street. But everyone can relate to his chosen subject: inequality. He studies the economic differences between people with the same discipline that Jane Goodall studies chimpanzees or Stephen Hawking studies the cosmos.

  • One Crisis Down, Next Up: The School District budget meltdown | Young Philly Politics – This is a situation the School District ignored as it padded executive offices and signed off on millions of dollars in contracts for the past five months – despite appeals that contracts should be prioritized or even held off until the state budget came through. It’s a situation the School District steadfastly refused to acknowledge even when the governor’s budget was clearly dead in the water. It’s a situation that the School District’s only apparent preparation for was a “doomsday budget” it passed out to Council last spring in the event of a worst-case scenario.

Netbook Lust

I have found myself increasingly lusting for a netbook.  The only thing holding me back, save a lack of funds, is whether or not the smaller sized keyboards are useable.  It’s no surprise that netbooks are extremely popular, given perfectly appropriate feature sets at affordable prices, putting mobile, wireless computing in reach of those typically left behind.

If you’re not sure if a netbook is for you, DVICE has a rundown of common features and Lifehacker runs down their list of top five user-submitted faves.  On the basis of specs, considering weight, keyboard size, battery life, options and features, and filtered for price, I think my top five choices would be the Samsung NC10, the Lenovo S10, the Dell Inspiron Mini 12, the Acer Aspire One, and the ASUS EEEPC 1000HE.
