Engagement via Toolbar for Your Site!

Seems like we now have choices – Wibiya, Gigya, or Meebo.  Why would you want to do this?  Keep users on your site, add additional sources of revenue via paid search, add opportunities for interaction between your users, and allow for engagement with your site and content.

Thinking it may be ‘New Theme’ time…

It might be time for a new theme here. I’ve whittled it down to 5 choices from the Wordpress Themes page, with an emphasis on originality, minimalism, configurability, flexebility, and aesthetics.

The few that have made the cut are as follows:

It’ll take a good long time before I get around to choosing, and longer still until I make all the custom changes and tweaks to transition over from Cutline.

Apologies for a Degraded Blogging Experience…

As any of you visiting via inferior browsers (OK, browser – MSIE) may have noticed, the layout has been FUBAR. I’ve been working on a three-column theme and some interesting applications of the Wordpress plugin Who-Sees-Ads for both contextual advertising as well as contextual content. I was also going to upgrade to the newest version of Wordpress. I’ll take another shot at it this evening – if things don’t look normal, that’s why.

Your content, your platform; or their content, their platform?

Interesting ideas regarding writing on your own blog (as an example, GigaOm includes blog-platform-as-social-network, specifically Wordpress) versus sharing content on a social network site.  I think the win-win is to syndicate your content via limited content RSS feeds linking back to your blog.  They get content, you get traffic and referrer links, and hopefully reputation, authority, traffic, and advertising revenue.

Regarding Blog-Flare…

The concept of “flare” is inspired by the seminal 90s movie, Office Space, where Jennifer Anniston’s character gets berated by her employer at a Fridays-Bennigans-Houlihan’s knockoff for not having the required amount of “flare” on her uniform.  The “flare” is supposed to be the equivalent of a sticker filled bumper or the backpack covered with band patches and buttons.  What does it all mean in terms of webculture?

Redesign in Progress

By examining my user stats in Statcounter, Feedburner, and Google Analytics, it appears that the vast majority of you prefer to get this site’s content via a feedreader.  As such, you most likey have NEVER actually seen the main page.

I’ve adopted a new theme, Cutline by Chris Pearson, and am currently tweaking the layout and transitionion the many custom elements from my prior K2 theme , mostly discovering that they were missing by accident.

Please feel free to click on through and let me know what you think via the contact page or below in the comments.

That was only a test…

Sorry for the 42 "Test" posts – I was trying to troubleshoot a conflict with my Google Sitemap – Alas, I was not successful.

Thoughts on Blog Advertising…

A tweet from Colin DeVroe regarding ads on blogs made me pull and paste the following from a business plan I'm working on…

Akkam’s Razor has been advertisement free for nearly all of its online life.  After a great deal of thought, that will change.

One of the areas that I struggled with, besides that of my own financial situation, was what effect the presence of advertising would have on my content and my readership.  Would it add or detract from my legitimacy, credibility, and authority?  Would it drive or diminish traffic?  And how well does advertising mesh with my own personal ethics?

Lazyweb: WP-ColorJack

Another plugin I’d make if I knew how…

I’d like a plugin that would allows the user to quickly change the “mood” of their website via a color wheel with individual colors mapped to diffent sylistic functions.  You should be able to pick the background colors, text colors, and so on.
