Digg news problem…

Out of the first 15 items on the Digg frontpage, by my reckoning, 6 of them are NOT news.  There REALLY needs to be a choice besides "OK, this is lame" to rank items that are not news…like perhaps "This is not newsworthy".  Until then, lame it is.

Why Geeks make Good Fathers…

Plenty of women, like my spouse for example, who often complain about being computer widows.  This blog post points out why geeks make good fathers.

How to tell when someone is lying…

An interesting link via digg. Cliffs:

How this information is used to detect lies: Example: Let’s say your child ask’s you for a cookie, and you ask them "well, what did your mother say?" As they reply "Mom said… yes." they look to the left. This would indicate a made up answer as their eyes are showing a "constructed image or sound. Looking to the right would indicated a "remembered" voice or image, and thus would be telling the truth.

And of course, it’s not necessarily an established science.

A cool feature on a gMaps powered project…

The absolute best feature here is the "Export to Google Earth" feature.
Note that you can also export NWS satellite images by state. To make this map, I searched for Hollywood, FL, and then exported the view to gEarth. I then returned to MyJavaServer Weathermaps and exported the NWS images for Florida. The result is the image you see below.

Tricks of the Trade: Negotiator

"Most folks who bargain forget the cardinal rule: after stating your initial offer stop talking! Breathe normally, but wait for the other party to speak next. And after they make a counteroffer, continue to hold your peace for a bit — faced with silence, many will immediately start to sweeten the pot."

It took me awhile to learn this one. I was sitting in my office with the General Manager at the Saturn Dealership, listening to some salesperson charm us on how wonderful their filtered tap water product would save us so much money compared to the water cooler type products. She told us the price, and we just sat there…she immediately started moving backwords on price. This is 100% absolutely true. Via Lifehacker.

Flickr Tricks-of-the-Trade

Crossposted on MeFi.
After blogging about the Saturn cutaway car, I recalled a few of the Flickrazzi’s who post the "how-to’s" of their daily lives. For example, 7-how-7 works for a production company that produces blow-up dolls for the entertainment film and commercial industry (via BoingBoing today), underbunny works as a mortician, rickenbacker documents his life in fast food, and then there’s a variety of active duty military folk who are documenting the mundane "over there", like ob1left, nevadog, At Ease, Doc Torres, enlisted cowboy, Nukeit1, JeffG, Luodanli, and the homsar. But if blogging at work can be bad, than I’m sure taking photos at work and sharing them with the interweb HAS to be worse.

ModCulture

Just some quick thoughts on "Mod Culture". No, not fanatical worship of the beatles, but rather the hacking, cracking, improvinq, & personalizinq of consumer products. I had previously attributed this to PC culture. For example, take 2 identical PC’s, give them to 2 people, & re-examine them in 1 year. They’ll be totally different. Apps, fonts, desktop, & peripherals. If you wanted to go back further, you could say hot rodders, or even WWII bomber nose art.

For the present day, I think it came from BMX’ers. We used to make custom G.I.Joe’s, too.
