Chrysler: Penny-wise, pound foolish

Last spring, we replaced our leased 2006 Toyota Sienna with a new-but-left-over 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan, purchased from Family Dodge at the Philadelphia Automall.

When Pop Culture and Economic Contrarianism meet the Social Sciences

The authors of the pop-culture books FREAKONOMICS and SUPERFREAKONOMICS (Steven D. Levitt and John A. List) state that “remarkable patterns” found in the data of the Hawthorne Experiment were proved to be “entirely fictional”.   From the paper’s abstract:

From the Archives: The Mummers

[Update for 2010: You can watch the mummers on TV (in Philadelphia) on WPHL17.  I can't find any available live online streams :( ]

Mummering is a pagan tradition dating back to 400 BC as the Roman Festival of Saturnalia with Celtic and Druidic influences. Rowdy groups (another proud Philadelphia tradition) parading on New Years Day goes back to Revolutionary times.

Amazon Listmania: Network Attached Storage

Now that my household is desktop-free (with his-and-her’s laptops), it’s difficult to share photos, music, and documents across our wireless network.  I previously had Orb running on the desktop, which allowed me to share files as well as use my at-home desktop’s TV-card to watch TV anywhere, including via capable mobile devices.

At some point in the near future, I plan on adding a Network Attached Storage device to my network.  My criteria is the ability to access files across both my network at home and anywhere via the internet, the ability to stream media off the drive, and the ability to automate backups.  I’ve created an Amazon Listmania for “Networked Attached Storage” to help share my choices with everyone.  Fell free to use the list as well, and comment in the links here with your own feedback, comments, and suggestions.

Nostalgia for 199X

I’ve recently begin feeling like moving to somewhere ridiculously rural. I’ve come to realize that during the 199Xs , I felt this way not because I was secretly a Ron Paul-libertarian who believed in the mythology of the rugged American rugged individualist, but rather because I have no patience for the Idiot Americans around me.

Just like in the 1990x, I am beginning to lose my ability to politely allow them to continue to say stupid things in my presence.   Montana is looking mighty good to me right now…
