Instant DVD Gratification is worth a Premium

I love me some Redbox.  I’m ashamed to admit that I’m probably a good 5-years behind on movies I want to see.  Buying any DVD (with the exception of kids’ movies) is a waste of money, in my opinion.  I contemplated signing up for Netflix, but I doubt I would utilize the service enough to justify the expense.  Redbox neatly fills that void by allowing me to pick up new releases at my convenience, all for the low price of $1 plus tax.

DIY Shamrock Shake

Carrying the Shamrock Shake is  up to the discretion of each franchisee, much like the rest of McDonald’s menu, so some of you may be Shamrock Shakeless (sorry New York, as of 2007).

Fortunately,  there is a recipe, which can be perfected with Bailey’s Irish Creme.  Check out some vintage commericals on YouTube.

MacMillan as ‘Canary in a Coalmine’?

Fellow North Catholic alum and Philadelphian crime noir author Duane Swierczynski tweeted that Amazon has removed all MacMillan books from their listings (note you can still purchase MacMillan books through third-parties via Amazon).

The NY Times explains the controversy thusly:

Macmillan, like other publishers, has asked Amazon to raise the price of e-books to around $15 from $9.99.

Amazon is naturally not a fan.  It is also relevant to consider MacMillan’s partnership with Apple with regards to the iPad.

iFail

I’m just not seeing the win.

Sure, the fanboy who has iEverything will grab one.  I likewise suppose that the person who would buy one of Apple’s other fine products but were deterred by the relative high price may also consider one.  Like others have mentioned, the iPad (horrible name, BTW.  iSlate, iBook, and iTablet would have been much better IMHO) has a series of shortcomings that are inexcusable:

  • No Adobe Flash
  • No multitasking
  • No camera
  • No HDMI-out.
  • No USB ports
  • No expandable memory via memory card

Tablets could ruin everything

Speculated mock-up of Apple’s forthcoming tablet product.

I’m watching all the speculation over Apple soon-to-be unveiled Tablet product, due to be revealed on 1/26/2010.   Steve Job’s had questioned the wisdom of a tablet (NYTimes via John Gruber):

Another former Apple executive who was there at the time said the tablets kept getting shelved at Apple because Mr. Jobs, whose incisive critiques are often memorable, asked, in essence, what they were good for besides surfing the Web in the bathroom.

Asking the wrong questions about social media

The mass printing of words via movable-block type did not reinvent books, it lowered the costs and made them more affordable.  The typewriter didn’t reinvent writing, it just made creating content faster and more uniform.

These are simplistic statements and certainly provable as false.  But the point remains valid – social media is going to change some industries and destroy others, but the fundamental processes remain the same.

Amazon Listmania: Network Attached Storage

Now that my household is desktop-free (with his-and-her’s laptops), it’s difficult to share photos, music, and documents across our wireless network.  I previously had Orb running on the desktop, which allowed me to share files as well as use my at-home desktop’s TV-card to watch TV anywhere, including via capable mobile devices.

At some point in the near future, I plan on adding a Network Attached Storage device to my network.  My criteria is the ability to access files across both my network at home and anywhere via the internet, the ability to stream media off the drive, and the ability to automate backups.  I’ve created an Amazon Listmania for “Networked Attached Storage” to help share my choices with everyone.  Fell free to use the list as well, and comment in the links here with your own feedback, comments, and suggestions.

What’s Important to PR Professionals

Problogger contributor Kirizia wrote about the questions she gets from publicists when requesting samples products to review:

  • “How long have you been blogging?”
  • “What’s your PR [Google Page Rank] rank?”
  • “Are you on Twitter?”
  • “Are you on Facebook?”
  • “How many unique users?”
  • “How many page views?”
  • “How fast can you get our review on your site?”
  • “Have you won any awards in the past?”
  • “Send us links to past reviews you’ve written.”
  • “What angle will you take with this feature?”
  • “I need all your company details before we release any samples to you.”

Price Cut on Amazon’s Kindle.

I’m still not personally sold on the concept and format, but for the heavy reader, the Kindle may become more appealing at a lower price point.  The Kindle (not the DX) is now $299, a reduction of $60.
