Can I take a photograph in the election booth?

365 - 139 - no photography

Just in case you were wondering, it might be illegal for you to photograph and post your ‘secret’ ballot on social media, depending on your state of residence.  A friend asked, and I looked it up, via TPM.

Going Local on #sandy

There are a handful of local blogs who are killing it on Hurricane-Sandy-Frankenstorm coverage.

Also don’t miss these:

Here is the story of the snor’eastercane…

Jalopnik linked to this in the WSJ:

Odds are increasing that a hybrid “snor’eastercane” could make landfall near Greater New York early next week, with wide-ranging impacts affecting nearly the entire East Coast.

[...]

Current worst case scenarios going into the weekend have a strengthening Tropical Storm Sandy emerging from the Caribbean and merging — or “phasing”, in weather terminology — with an intensely potent Arctic cold front coming down from the Great Lakes. The combined storm would then veer back northwestward toward Greater New York, pushed against the atmospheric grain by anomalously strong “blocking” high pressure centered over far eastern Canada.

Such a storm could bring several inches of snow to upstate New York and parts of New Jersey, tropical storm force winds from Virginia to Maine, and the potential for significant coastal flooding from New York City to New England. In short, we could have quite a mess on our hands.

The Perfect Storm of literary, meteorological  and cinema fame occurred 21 years ago, on Halloween. PhillyWeather.net put up a short piece yesterday detailing the possible scenarios.

Newspaper pageview dirty tricks

Two local newspapers employ pageview tricks that best are annoying and at worst cheating.

The DelcoTimes splits even the smallest article into multiple pages;  When you navigate to the second page, a pop-up window appears.

The mobile version of Philly.com has a link to the desktop version of the site at the bottom of each article, but instead of rendering the full version of the article you are redirected to the index page.  The DelcoTimes doesn’t offer a mobile-optimized view.

I understand and appreciate the need to maximize pageview, but print-era metrics are no longer appropriate.  Facebook realized nearly 5 years ago that the pageview was dead.  When will print come to the same realization?
