Daily Links for June 26th

  • The Steve Rubel Lifestream – Why Lifestream? To Model Leonardo Da Vinci – I like to think of a lifestreaming as today's digital equivalent of Leonardo Da Vinci's notebooks. (Make no mistake, I am no Da Vinci nor do I think of myself in such a way. It's purely an aspirational metaphor.) Da Vinci recorded notes, drawings, questions and more in his notebooks. Some of these were quite mundane (grocery lists and doodles), others were not. But the body of work was over time, a view of a one individual's mind (in his case a great one).
  • The top 250 best movies of all time Map | Vodkaster – Le Blog de la cinéphilie 2.0 – This is a map I made listing all of the 250 best movies, as voted by IMDb.com users on the 19th of june 2009. Hope you’ll have fun travelling around this cinematographic subway plan !
  • Iran: History, nukes and missiles – Reading between the lines, a major (yet unspoken) concern is over the country's stability and the safety of Iran's nuclear and missile facilities.

To understand the scope of the situation, one must brush up on Iranian history first. Here are a couple of wire graphics to help you out. And then you can check out my News Illustrated page (coming out Sunday) to understand the political hierarchy and why there is growing international concern.

  • There’s That Facebook “Everyone Button” We Told You About – Don’t be fooled by what appears to be a minor change in the user interface. This is another indication of Facebook’s extreme desire to get users to make as much of their data public as possible. Just like Twitter.
  • TRANSFORMERS REVENGE OF THE FALLEN Review | FilmBuffOnLine Newsreel – The main problem here is Bay’s process. As a filmmaker, he has always seemed more interesting in the spectacle than the human drama going on around it. And when he does remember that there are human characters in the film, he handles them in the most basic, cursory way that drains every scene of dramatic potential. There’s a scene towards the end of the film where the underlying idea is that a father has to recognize that his son has become a man in his own right. It comes during a climactic battle, with the destruction of Earth being the price of our heroes’ failure. This should be gripping stuff, but since Bay has treated the film’s hero Sam’s (Shia LaBeouf) parents as buffoons for the preceding two hours, it packs as much wallop as being hit in the face with damp toast.
  • 12 Mistakes Businesses Should Avoid During a Recession – What characterizes a recession? Panic, desperation, overreacting – in other words, the opposite of clear thinking. This is especially the case in the business world. Unfortunately, many companies fall victim to mistakes that are a result of allowing the market to wholly dictate their business moves. Because often times, what seem like good ideas at the time, simply are not. The following are some of the most common mistakes that businesses make from this paradigm, that actually end up costing them in the long run[.]
  • MythBuster Adam Savage Leads Twitter Revolt Against AT&T – The source of the recent flurry of AT&T tweets is Adam Savage of MythBusters fame, who tweets that for “a few hours of web surfing in Canada” he was charged a whopping $11,000. AT&T is apparently claiming that Savage managed to download 9 gigabytes in Canada using his USB data connection (which he calls “frakking impossible“). What’s worse, the customer service rep Savage was dealing with was apparently a bit loose with their decimal points, telling Savage that “data is charged at .015 cents, or a penny and a half, per kb”. Read that again — there’s a couple orders of magnitude difference there.

Now Twitter is in revolt. With over 50,000 followers Savage has a pretty loud voice, and his outraged tweets certainly resonate with a broad audience. In the end, he’ll probably get a pass from AT&T — nobody wants to mess with a man who blows things up for a living.

  • Today’s Papers That Don’t Have Michael Jackson on the Front Page – Lemondrop – Oh hey, did you hear, Michael Jackson died?!

We visited Today's Front Pages at the Newseum to see how the story played out. Worst cover line? The Boston Herald, at left (even the New York Post resisted punning).

But in some markets, the obit didn't even make the front page. Today's top features instead? "Rehab no excuse for missing court" and "Cage fighting to return downtown during Bike Time Festival."

Some papers went to press after the Farrah news came out but before the Jacko story (and the Internet) broke, while others are local-only.

Still, we rounded up the stragglers so you know where to go when you get burned out on nonstop coverage. (Best when viewed while listening to AOL Radio's all-MJ channel.)
