As someone who has had a variety of workplace experiences but no weighty title, it occurs to me that I might be better served by a functional resume (versus chronological). Has there been any thought as a wizard that would facilitate that? Maybe on LinkedIn or Salary.com? It seems like a great way to value the individual via the sum (product?) of their skills. The templates I’ve seen emphasize skills over title, and value qualifications and experience over chronological history. The writing process includes brainstorming, organizing skillsets by category, and arranging, with a summary, education, and chronological employment located at the bottom.
Also, with regards to jobs and positions, would/could there be a “jobs you may like” feature that takes your profile (on LinkedIn, for example), and compares it against others, or better still, compares job accomplishments, skills, and responsibilities, and suggests other jobs and careers? Think of it as Netflix for employment – a career recommendation engine!

Ooh, I like that idea. I’d love to feed my resume in somewhere and have it spit out available positions that might interest me. I’m personally flexible enough that I’m willing to think outside the box. But current employment sites require an all or nothing approach. I can search for all the jobs in my geographic area (hard to filter) or I can search by category (and that’s too limiting). There has to be a better way!
I’ve sent this post in as a suggestion to the LinkedIn team – hopefully it resonates…
