World War IV: Excellent News for Republicans

August 15th, 2008 · No Comments

Eisenhower warned us about this so many years ago.  Politicians of all stripes, but particularly Republicans, love them some war.  The more the better, in fact.

The public’s is losing patience with the Great War on Terror.  The national as a whole is experiencing  a gradual extinction of the fear response (being replaced with looming financial uncertainty).  Conservatives are clearly anticipating the diminishing financial rewards of the Long War, but as a funder of campaign coffers as well as new plunder for profit.  Iran is not panning out to be the great threat they had hoped.  Simply put, they are running out of war-porn.

What better thing to do but to go back to the play book authored by McCarthy, practiced and perfected post World War II, and “ended” under Reagan.  Suddenly, this Russian Resurgence and their dominance over Georgia (check this interactive Google Map found via Ogle Earth) in response to Georgian aggression has been met with tired analogies to 1938 and Poland, again Godwining our national discourse, much to the delight of many a neoconservative.  What we need is Cold War 2.0.

John McCain believes himself to be an expert on the Cold War, though seemingly ignorant of contemporary history.  He also is presuming to “act Presidential” by “sending a delegation” to Georgia, namely BFFs Huckleberry Graham and Joe Lieberman, as though he already has the job. McCain campaign member and former-Georgian lobbyist Randy Schnuenemann will not be in attendance.  Interestingly, candidate McCain is also presumptively stating that military options are on the table regarding Russia as well.

A fact often lost on American pop-culture historians is that we were not being tested by the Russians when they decided to place nuclear missles off the coast of Florida in Cuba.  No, the Russians were actually countering  our placement of nukes in Turkey.  What do we learn from this?  Why, to provoke the Russians further by placing missles in Poland, of course.   We also stated that we would take over operation of Georgian ports and use warships to deliver humanitarian supplies.  Fortunately, the Pentagon appears to have spiked that move.
