How Hitler Did It…

You'll probably encounter this article by Clive James in Slate all across the interwebs today, accompanied by shrieking cries of "fascist", "wingnut" and "moonbat", and appeals to Godwin.

Take a few minutes and read this, and think long and hard about where we are, where we're going, and where we're likely to end up.

It's far to easy to say it can't happen here, when it most clearly can.  The usual dissents include that "too many Americans own guns",  that the very idea was is a sensationalized attempt to sell books or gain political capital, and that the economic conditions that enabled him do not currently exist.  Funny things about the future – it's always a suprise.

Godwin's law exists for just this reason – comparing anything to Hitler diminishes Hitler, and makes the actions of WW2 Germany seem reasonable.  It's far better to examine the political environment and climate, and to see where things could go rather than boldly stating Bush = Hitler.
