Who Will be “My Pet (Scape) Goat”?

December 1st, 2006 · No Comments

The resignation of Rumsfeld will certainly not be enough.  And I'm certain that BushCo is desperately looking for someone to hang the miserable failure that is Iraq on anyone outside the inner-sanctum, but Baker Commission notwithstanding, I don't see it happening.

Political Cortex has a diary framing the sordid mess throught the most notorious children's book in American history, My Pet Goat

As you might have recalled, this is the book George W. Bush blankly looked at for far too long after finding out our country was under attack.  PC user GreyHawk details the conceptial origin of the "scapegoat":

Traditional meaning of the word "scapegoat" is a very literal one: a goat, upon which all the sins and sorrows of a town were symbolically placed, who was cast out (driven out) of town to die alone in the desert.

This symbolically cleansed the town, leaving the actual sinners somehow blameless or redeemed, and the town was then ready to start the new year "fresh" and free from sin or blame for past transgressions.

The last six years has seen everyone baring the blame for other's (but particularly Bush's) irresponsibility, carelessness, arrogance, ignorance, and stubborness.

So again, who gets the blame for Iraq?

  • Rumsfeld?
  • Liberals?
  • Democrats?
  • The ousted Republican Congress?
  • Bill Clinton?
  • The Neocons?
  • Pollsters?
  • Hollywood?
  • Iran?
  • Syria?
  • The Press?
  • The Bloggers?
  • The Iraqi People?
  • The Military?
  • The American People?
  • Sportscasters?
  • The ACLU?
  • Grandmas?
  • Faux Politics Shows on Comedy Channels?

You can see it with the Baker Commission…they aren't there to find solutions - their job is to provide political cover.  And even then, Bush manages to screw it up.  The Baker Commission states that there should be a gradual drawdown (ie. de-escalation) through 2008.  Bush counters that there will be no "graceful exit" from Iraq.

Someone must pay?  So who will it be?
