Homework on China

February 2nd, 2006 · No Comments

Just jotting down some notes, questions, and assumptions:

  • How big is the threat of war with China over Taiwan?
  • How severe is the currency problem (they peg the yuan to the dollar, weakening the dollar)?
  • What is the impact of their lack of respect for intellectual property and indifference towards piracy?
  • What is the effect (on China) of the trade imbalance with the United States?
  • Will China open it’s markets to foreign imports?
  • Will the change from a rural agrarian economy to an industrial one be disruptive?
  • To what extent is industry in China subsidized?
  • How severe is China’s handling of important news and embarassments given the probability of an outbreak of avian flu?
  • How much of the “appearance” of China is actual “substance”?
  • In what ways does the Eastern view of government differ from the Western view
