Delco to get new flood insurance maps

August 5th, 2005 · No Comments

This time last year, Delaware County was recovering from some Biblical Rain, sub, erging a significant section of Upper Darby. Franny Ward from “I Live in Delaware County” indicates that new flood maps are going to be created for Delaware County.

The whole flooding “phenomenon”, like most things I encounter, pisses me off. Consider the following:

1.) This region has been built on a floodplain, with dozens, if not hundreds of creeks being dammed -up, diverted, or converted into sewers. Graphic via PhilaH2O.

2.) Um, we’re in a valley. (And the suburbs are at a lower elevation than their northern and western neighbors).

3.) The former greenery that surrounded the city, in both the near and far-suburbs, has been plowed over and redeveloped from farms and greenspace (which absorb and slow water) into retail, residential, and commercial space.

4.) Water utility companies upstream often make decisions on their water (gate) management that negatively impact communities downstream.
