White House has “lame duck” concerns

May 2nd, 2005 · No Comments

On HBO’s the Sopranos, Tony is overjoyed about the family of ducks that took up residence in his pool. When this same ducks take off, he’s distraught. Was it a symbol of what’s missing in his life? How about Duck Cheney? What does her appearance mean for the Bush Administration?

Long story short…that spontaneous Thursday night news conference was some wishful thinking for the Bush team. They gave the networks all of one-days notice, during sweeps no less. And by asking it to start at 8:30 (which was their original requests), they were virtually guaranteed an extra one hour of exposure (1/2 hour before, 1/2 hour after). Not suprisingly, the networks said no, with the exception of ABC. Is there any significance of the press conference occuring on the 99th day of his presidency? Is it any suprise that it reinforced his prior victories, like Bankruptcy and Tort Reform, and tried to put a partisan spin on his plans for Social Security and his Energy Policy. And then, he had made some noticable concessions on his Social Security plan, finally acknowledging the necessity of some benefit cuts, and admitting that his Energy Plan will do nothing for gas prices.

I’d guess that the magnaminous appearance by Laura and George Bush at this weekends White House Press Corespondents Dinner, as well as it’s timing is no coincidence. The new polls will be coming out, and Dubya has been successful woth some of his political capital, but has he hit wall on his main issues of Social Security and the Energy Policy? See also the WaPo article about what Bush said vs. what he meant.
