Car Buyer’s Notebook.com: The Real Import of the GM-LA Times Dustup

April 15th, 2005 · No Comments

GM reaction to the LA Times’ harsh reporting was to pull out all of its advertising. The Automotive “Press” and enthusiasts are gripping and complaining, but Frank at the Car Buyers Notebook thinks that GM has an ulterior motive:

“Have you noticed of all the people tsk-tsking about GM pulling their LA Times ads, none of them are newspaper advertising executives?

That’s because they’re having a Depend’s moment.

The real story here is that GM was wasting the money they were spending on newspaper advertising. I’m not referring to dealer advertising, which will continue to flow, due to sheer brinkmanship and the still underperforming promise of local Internet marketing penetration.”
