Dubya, the Texas Rangers, and Steroids

March 21st, 2005 · No Comments

The connection between Bush and the oddball State of the Union Address with the push to remove steroids from the sport seemed oddly out of place. Certainly there are more pressing concerns than the sanctity of the sport. And yet, here is congress, holding hearings on steroids while ignoring a raft of other issues.

It leads me to ask some questions - was there any use of steroids with the Texas Rangers during the period (1989-1998) that George W. Bush had a financial interest in them? Bush only had a hand in the day-to-day activities up until 1994. Based on this account by Tony Castro, Bush’s activities seemed to be limited to PR and front man. That same article has a who’s-who of baseball meeting with the President during the early days of his administration. Bush clearly seems to be a fan of the Great American Pastime.

The full frontal assault on steroids seems most curious, and much more like diversionary spin. I had not realized that Jose Conseco had played for the Rangers partly throught that time period. Canseco, in his book alleges that three Texas Rangers used steroids, and that Dubya had knowledge of it.
