WalMart Anti-Union Tactics - Time for a Change

March 2nd, 2005 · No Comments

To start off with, I’m a former union member (RWDSU, Local 1034), who despises WalMart. There is a new one opening up in Delaware County, on MacDade Blvd. After seeing what they did in Quebec (closing the store rather than unionize), they clearly use their muscle to intimidate. And you won’t win by winning the workers - you need to win the consumer. After the unions pitiful showing in Colorado’s attempt to unionize a store, it’s time to change your tactics.
I suggest a concentrated effort on NEW and profitable stores that Walmart cannot afford to close. Secondly, I would have a teamsters truck in front of the still under construction WalMart, and solicit interviews from the local press and local TV. The goal should be consumer education. Furthermore, the appearance should be similar to a “now hiring” trailer, but handing out Walmart info.
If you want to win against WalMart, you need to educate the consumer, not the worker. As far as organizing, you may need to negotiate VERY low initiation fees and dues with workers, and have them increase after the employee has 3-5 years seniority.
