TiVo is under seige, from competitors, the entertainment industry, and cable providers. Because of TiVo’s underpinning in Linux and accompanying geek credibility, they have long been split open, hacked, and augmented by the TiVo fan community.

The typical manufacturer would be fearful of losing their “intellectual property” and would electronically cripple their devices to not allow any modifications.

But TiVo has learned. Let the customer evangelize your product, and you will prosper as a result. TiVo has released a Software Development Kit (SDK) to make it easier.
