The Gadflyer: Lakoff

January 20th, 2005 · No Comments

Why are Dems looking for the Holy Grail and thinking that twisting speech is going to win them elections. It’s the message dummy?

This happens again and again reading Lakoff - he shows how the press and Democrats have accepted Republican language, to which as a reader you say, “That’s so right!” But then you wait for the new idea that can reverse things, and what Lakoff offers is usually pretty weak. Taxes should be discussed as “investments.” “Trial lawyers” should be renamed “public protection attorneys.” It’s not that I disagree with the wisdom of what’s being expressed, but can’t we come up with something a little snappier?

They’d be better off telling the public that this rebranding is the same shit, different brown bag, left on their doorsteps, on fire.
