What do you do when the talent revolts?

Let me get this out in the open - TechTV has sucked since Comcast took over and merged it with G4. I personally haven’t watched it since Leo (and the Patrick) left the Screensavers.

Read this post from Dan Huard about the drama that was his daily work life. Then read Wil Wheaton’s post at /. about why he quit Arena on G4. Kevin Rose doesn’t refute or distance himself from Dan Huard’s observations. Then you can read this story about the last day of the now cancelled Unscrewed.

So what happened? A large company bought a small company, largely because the programming on this small company brought them into homes and markets that they were previously not in. Also, in the cable industry, one of the major expenses it the purchase of content. So its cheaper if you own it. So then you throw out the old talent and replace it with your existing “talent”.

As all the above had said, TechTV was “by geeks, for geeks”. Comcast, in their infinite wisdom decided to go mass-market (as opposed to niche) programming by dumming down the programming to console gamers. As a result, many of the old “core” viewers have promptly pulled the plug.

My two cents: You are better off specializing and focusing on niches as opposed to mass markets. Secondly, the mavens who watched TTV in the past were probably worth more on an advertising basis then the console gamers that G4 is going for. Comcast is local for me, so I don’t want to wish them ill - but I hope they are forced to learn an uncomfortable lesson.

Another point: Corporations have to realize that the can no longer take action and be able to obscure facts with a well timed press release. Anyone with a keyboard and an internet connection can spill the beans to a worldwide audience.
