SMS for Emergency Commnications

BoingBoing links to a NYT article (sub. req.) suggesting that SMS via cellphone would be a good way to let the masses know of impending disaster.

On a less grave note, I’ve been hoping that SEPTA would do the same thing for regional rail (train) delays. I envision an interface where you pick the Routes that you travel, and the time frames you travel them, and what alerts you want to receive. Whenever an appropriate alert comes up, then you’ll get it.

You can expand this out for weather, traffic, Amber Alerts, and various other civil emergencies. As we remember, during 9/11, regular phone and cell phone networks were out or unreliable, however, email, the internet, and instant messaging were all still working..
