If your right to vote is challenged…

Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer.

There are rumors on the internets that voters in some states will have their right to vote challenged. Each state has their own processes as far as who can or can’t vote. For example, convicted felons and/or those incarcerated or on probation typically cannot vote.

On election day, do the following:

  • If you received a registration card, bring it with you
  • Bring photo ID as well as any bills or “official” documents that you have that can verify your residence (ie. University Rosters, Utility Bills, Driver’s License, etc.)
  • In most states, you can only be challenged if the challenger has personal knowledge about your ineligibility to vote. Several courts in Florida and Ohio have ruled that the presence of your name on a returned mail database does not constitute a fraudulent registration.
  • If the challenge proceeds, and you know that you are legally allowed to vote, talk to the election officers. Follow the process…election courts will be setup throughout the country. Don’t be lazy - take the time and place your vote.
