Could 2004 be the same as 1964?

Brainstorming off of my previous post, and with no substantive data to support, could the division in the electorate result in results which show the opposite of the results of 1964?

In 1964, Goldwater, as the right-wing republican candidate, only managed to win the traditional bible belt. Furthermore, turnout played a HUGE roll in the election. Note the percentages of Voter Age Populations for Voter Turnout (20% Higher in the Democrat States) as well as the Percentage of Registered Voters. The popular vote showed similar trends as we are seeing this year. I feel the race will certainly be closer, but if turnout numbers and registrations hold true, than it does seem reasonable to see a similar result.
