Sometimes the simplest answer is correct. Sometimes not.

So what exactly is a lie?

I’m of the opinion that if you knowingly say something that is not the absolute truth, then it is a lie. There are no “color-alerts” for lying…it’s either the truth or its not. Case in point: Cheney states that he had never met John Edwards prior to the debate on 10/5. However, there are screencaps of Cheney at a pancake breakfast where Edwards is in attendance. The right-wing punditry is already defending Cheney, saying that “he must not have made an impression” or “he meant seeing him on the floor of the House”.

This tactic, and the long standing practice of such is so persuasive in the current administration. I believe that the political tactic is plausible deniability, you can never be tied down by your words. Phrases such as “imminent threat”, “tax increase”, “permission slip from other countries”, “operating within the law”, every single one is a calculating massaging of truth to promote their agenda. How else could a bill that weakens air quality standards be labeled “Blue Skies Initiative”?

So, here is the test, if it is not an unconditionally truthfull statement, its a lie. PERIOD.
