What did America think of the AWB?

October 4th, 2004 · No Comments

I think it is reprehensible that the NRA was holding Bush ransom regarding the Assault Weapons Ban. If Bush would have pressed for the extension of the bill, the NRA would not have endorsed him (although I do not believe that they have as of yet.)

Mind you, the AWB is probably a worthless bill. The weapons that are currently available are functionally no different than any pre-expiration firearms. The AWB prohbited flash-suppressors, bayonet mounts, and collapsing stocks. One could argue that flash suppressors could assist in the concealment of a crime, and that a collapsing stock could make a weapon easier to conceal, however, I can’t recall the last time someone was assaulted by bayonet.

That being said, examine the following polls:

NBC News/WSJ 61% Dissatisfied w/ Bill’s Expiration
Harris Poll 60% Favor more strict gun control
Harris Poll 71% Favor continuation of the Ban
Gallup 87% Favor same or more strict (pre-expiration)

Will of the people or will of the industry?
