After Bush’s acceptance speech, I am full of optimism!

September 3rd, 2004 · No Comments

I had initially been fearfull. I figured that Bush would win Florida because of the hurricanes (Charley and now Frances). I thought that the flip-flops on global warming, miscalculations on Iraq, and the public dissent on gay marriage policy by Cheney were an attempt to warm up to the moderate voter. I thought that the protestors would lose their minds and tear NYC apart. I even thought Dubya would fire Cheney, and bring on McCain and Guliani. I thought that he and Karl Rove (well, Karl Rove mostly) would have cooked up a grand ambitious set of domestic programs designed to truly show how compassionate this conservative was.

Instead, imagine my suprise while watching the President make his acceptance speech. It was like 1992…stay the course. I don’t think there was one new, fresh idea in the entire paltform. From his take on terror, social security, education, welfare, jobs, the economy…every single bit was recycled.

Last thought on this: did the media get sold on that whole bit about the last 6 paragraphs being the “aw shucks” “good-ol-boy” mentality that the conservatives seem to eat up? Bush had barely finished his “…and God Bless the USA” and Peter Jennings was already pontificating about the end of the speech. Peter??? Where were you for the first 40-some minutes?
